I would not worry about China or Russia, if they wanted a tiny island- they would take one without a serious military. I would worry more about the U.S., we seem to have no problem with over taking foriegn countries.

On a serious note, No I don't think any country would be able to withstand an invasion from China. They could seriously cripple any economy, but withdrawing their goods from your market. A comedian here made a joke about it, "if China stopped selling their goods- we would all be naked and without shoes". Our factories have closed, and all of the jobs have been shifted there. We would not be able to re-build our economy faster, than they could invade.

Neither could invade the UK.

China doesn't have a Navy capable of invaded Taiwan, let alone the UK. They can't send troops or other weapon systems to fight.

Russia, also doesn't have a good enough Navy to take the British (who have the second most powerful Navy in the world). The only way Russia could invade the UK would be to invade several other countries (Finland, Norway, and Sweden) then would have to do a D-Day like invasion, which they can't. They would have trouble invading all the way to Norway, and they don't have a Navy to get them to the British Isles.

Therefore the UK could stand a direct invasion from China or Russia.

And about the Economy statement, China can cripple your economy for a few years tops. Their cheap goods can easily be replaced by other poor countries who need jobs. (Indonesia, Pakistan, etc) Also, China would be hurt more by cutting off trade. Cheap goods can be replaced in the UK and the US. But China can't replace all the lost jobs.

A direct invasion no. The UK army isn't strong enough for that (not that their soldiers aren't tough or well trained, or even well equipped, there just aren't enough of them). At no point in history has the UK been able to withstand that type of invasion, so they keep their enemies far away by mantaining a world class Navy and Air force.

Neither China nor Russia have the necessary assets to invade a power by air or sea. It takes ships and planes made for transport. Russia can deploy in a limited manner and China has no amphib.
