I'm really wanting to try to get intimate with my husband again even though it's only been a few weeks since delivery. I had a 2nd degree tear which isn't as bad as the first time. I had a 4th degree the first time around and couldn't do anything for almost 2 1/2 months. Do you think we should go ahead a try or should we wait a few more weeks. I don't like waiting this long, plus I think my husband would like to also, but he did say he doesn't want to hurt me if I'm not ready. Any suggestions?

You are supposed to wait until the 6 week check up to make sure everything looks ok.

I would suggest waiting until your 6 week check-up and address your concerns to your physician. The reason to wait 6 weeks is because your uterus is still adjusting to return to its "pre-pregnant" state. There's a lot of recovery that needs to be done. Also, the tear is another issue. It may not be as bad as a 4th degree, but it's still not good. It's better to wait and be safe, than to try something, not knowing if it will hurt you or not.

What did your doctor say, how long did they advise you to wait. I think that just having a baby 3 weeks ago - it is too soon, you are still healing and it would be best to wait, why go thru the pain and problems if it gets infected or re-opened (or worse).

But call a nurse, or dr, or talk to a doula for more advice.

You are supposed to wait the 6 weeks for reasons beyond external healing, you have to let your insides heal as well.

As I understand it, the release of the placenta is akin to having a scab removed from the inside of your uterus. Doctors don't want you to expose that "injured" part of the uterus to foreign materials before it has a chance to heal.

I think that you should ask your doctor what he/she thinks. Then with their advice move from there. After my son's birth the doctors gave me the episiotomy and was only slight but after two weeks everything was ok.
