The states of South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Louisiana, Florida, Arkansas, and Texas seceeded from the United States by 1861. The secession of those 11 states was not recognized by President Abraham Lincoln or the rest of the American government. The Confederate States of America was never recognized as an independent nation by any country.
BTW. The Cherokee Nation did have units in the Confederate Army, but it was not part of the Confederacy. The Confederacy recognized the Cherokee nation was sovereign in its own right, which is why the Cherokees supported the Confederacy.

All of the states had voluntarily joined together to become the United States of America. Several states felt that they had the right to withdraw from that union and form a separate country, the Confederate States of America. The states remaining in the union said NO! and went to war to prevent the dissolution of the union. It's called a civil war because the U.S. won it and brought the no-longer-C.S.A. states back into the union. If the Confederacy had won, it would not be called a civil war. And in fact, many southerners still refer to it as the War Between the States. They name several of the battles differently, too.
