Use natural light, go outside and find interesting objects that create neat shadows. When you shoot it, show that contrast....its about HOW you frame your shot, and use your lighting that will give you that fantastic image your after! You already named the cliche' objects, so do stay away from those, or maybe try one or two and make it interesting! You have a lot to shoot out there, just go shoot it....shoot as much as you can, you can go through them later to pick out the best ones...

i'm a fan of forest preserves, the city streets, and even right out your front door....

maybe even consider looking at textures....do some macro shots even...(a close up of a flower bud, or tree branch, a bug in the grass....

Does the photo contest have a theme? Fitting into the category is often just as important as taking a great image. I judged contest today and there was a flower entered in the vehicle category.

You need to stand out in the crowd!

I suggest that you get your favourite cuddly toy, a monkey perhaps because everyone loves them. Keep the monkey, teddy bear whatever you choose, with you eveywhere you go for a couple of days. Photograph the toy in as many situations you can. In the bathroom, on a park bench, at dinner, in the school grounds, in all the places you are going to go anyway.

Keep camera and soft you to hand and I am sure you'll get a couple of outstanding images. Keep thinking out of the box. Choose the image that everyone in your family likes. It has to be very original and humorous if possible.Good Luck.

Go to AIRC-Adorama Imaging Resource Center and click on SFX Photography. Elinor Stecker-Orel is an instructor at NYIP. Try some of her double and multiple exposures in Photoshop. You'll definitely stand out from the crowd.

Do something with really good depth of field and fantastic light such as setting up a really pretty still life. Remember the light in your photograph is very important and will draw peoples attentions to your entry.

Just look for interesting patterns, they are all around us, and think perspective, don't just stand point and shoot, crouch down and take tho odd photo. step back and try looking at you world through new eyes.

Good look in the contest,

PS if you win you can always put the prise on Ebay.
