i think thats really good for you teaching yourself. im 11 and i hit a driver 115 yards. my dad has taught me to drive and do all the other things so i think you should go and play with people that are better than you so you can learn from them.

I would recommend going to the golf course. Then you can enjoy the fruits of your labor of all the hard work. If you get paired with some people make them aware of your golfing ability. If you're at the local course and by yourself, ask the pro to pair you up with some people of possible equal ability. After playing a few rounds and learning from people in your group, you can go back to the driving range and work on some things. Don't play the back tees until your ready.
Word of advise: Don't get caught up in how far you or other people hit the ball with each particular club. There are a lot of factors that go into play in regards to distance. Golf is about playing tendencies, percentages and course management. Golf is also very addictive. There has not been a round that I haven't played that I did not feel like I could have been one shot better. It can ruin a good marriage (living example). I play to a +1 handicap but always feel there is something I can do better. The best practice you can get into is developing a pre-shot routine that includes some visualization. This will come easier after you've been playing a little while. You must practice the pre-shot routine while also hitting balls on the range. It needs to become part of your swing not in addition to it... I hope this helps...

You really need to get out and play the game. Almost everybody who ever played the game has struggled at first.
I wouldn't recommend that you play in the first group out on a Saturday morning, though. You'll probably play at a slower pace at first. You don't want to have the groups behind you constantly telling you to hurry up.
Call a local course and let them know you're a beginner. They may be able to recommend a good starting time.
Or, there might be a par-three course or an "executive" course near you. They're usually good places for beginners to start.
But it's important to get out on a course. This will let you hit some golf shots, as opposed to just hitting the ball.

The best reason to hit the course is being outside in a beautiful setting with no cell phones, no outside distractions or a wife or girlfriend around to find something for you to do around the house. Golf is a game where you can get better the more you play. If you add three of your buddies to make a foursome, a few cold beers to sip on and a nice course to play, it won't matter what you shoot. You will have had fun just being out there and enjoying the day with some friends over a good round of golf, beer and quality time spent.

You've got a bit of a slice. Normal for beginners and people who have been playing for many years.
Anyway, I see that you have a big difference between shots hit off a tee and shots off the ground. I think you may be trying to "help" your shots into the air. The key for flush iron shots is to stay down and hit down on the ball. This creates backspin and gets your ball airborne.
Get a lesson or three. You're ready if you can make decent contact with the ball. Obviously you have some athletic ability, so it's time to sharpen your game.

I don't think your game is crappy, I commend you for your success to this point, some people try and try and can only hit worm burners! You didn't mention how your putting game is going. I definitely think you should hit the course. Get a feel for a real game, see how you do, what needs to improve, etc...you don't have to be Tiger to get out there and have fun! I wish you all the luck in the world! Sounds like you are off to a great start. Remember that if you do get tee time the club may set you up w/ some people you don't know, and may play you in groups of 4.. Don't be intimidated. Explain that you are a beginner, and I am positive they will have all sorts of advice for you...it may not be good advice though so beware! :-) :-)

When I started playing golf, I went to par 3 courses first and worked my way up to regulation courses. When you first start at a regular course, you will ask yourself why you can't hit the ball like you do when you are practicing. That's because you are not practicing anymore. Golf is about repetition. That is what the practice is all about. The more you practice, the more repetitive things will be and you will build that memory in your muscles. Go on out there and see what you can do. Keep practicing!

I just started playing in July. I took 3 lessons before hitting the course, played one game and went back and took the 4th and final lessons. His advise was to go and play a few games and come back to tweek any bad habits or brush up on things.
The challenge is not how far you can hit the ball, but how accurate you can hit it. Lessons will help with that. But, either way get on the course and see what happens. You might like the range, but hate the game.

Try your first 18 hole first and have a feeling about it. It is a different world when playing 18 holes as compare to playing at driving range. Direction and control is something you need to focus as a beginner. Once you can hit the ball solidly, you can try to increase the distance.

Dude......go out and play.....Enjoy this great game of golf. Don't listen to anyone that says that they can hit it further. I am 40 yrs old and hit my driver about 250. Hit my 6 iron 160, and a PW about 100. But my index is 2.6. So go out and just have fun and just remember to respect the game.
