I had my oldest child dedicated when he was 4 1/2 years old. My second child was 2 1/2 years old, my 3rd was 5 months old (all three on the same day), my 4th was just 2 months old, and my 5th was just shy of 17 months old when he was dedicated. So, I'd have to say that your 18 month old is not too old.

Just because YOU dedicate a child too young to understand what they are being dedicated too, does not mean your child will accept it when he/she is older. Why not dedicate YOURSELF to being a good role model and let your child decide when they are within the age of reason?

A child can be dedicated at whatever age the parent wishes to do so, this does not guarantee that the child will decide to follow that path, only that the parents have chosen to nudge/direct/push/steer their child towards a certain frame of thinking.

To what or to whom?

If you are asking if the child is too young to be dedicated (in the sense of promised to be raised in the worship of) to the Deity (or Deities) you believe in, then the answer is no.

Many religions/sects do have a dedication ceremony. In ancient times it also served as the child's introduction to the clan or tribe they were part of. In Hebrew tradition, the first-born male was dedicated at the even younger age of 40 days, so there is precedent here.....

In order to dedicate our lives to God's service, we must have a basic knowlege of the bible. I don't believe that an 18 month old infant has that.
I've never met an infant at that age who could read and comprehend.

Not at all! People dedicate all ages of children. It is a wonderful thing to do!

The purpose of dedication is to commit back to God what He has given you (your child), like Samson's mother did him...so no, if we can commit our lives back to God and become born again at 25, 35...65..95., then God surely will accept the gift of your son at 1.5....(smile)

blessings~

No. Your child is not too old. Age does not matter.

Matthew 19 - The Little Children and Jesus
13Then little children were brought to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked those who brought them.
14Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." 15When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there.
