Pray to the holy spirit to guide you through it, the do's and dont's in the Bible are there to help us, it doesn't mean everyone followed them, they are warnings to help us. They are stories of other's mistakes, others misfortunes, the people in the Bible comitted the same sins we do today. Once you start understanding it a little better, you will see that all can be forgiven if you really want God's peace and love in your heart. Don't get me wrong I tried three different times in my life to pick it up, but I guess I just hadn't gotten to the place where God thought I was ready for it. Don't give up pray you'll find someone to read it with you.It seemed to make it easier for me, the best part of all is God works in diffrent ways then we do, and you might think because a person has been reading a long time they know more than you, you will be shocked at how equally he shows us the truth, he won't let you look stupid.

If this is really tripping you up, consider this. There are really only 2 commands in all of scripture. 1)Love God and 2)Love others. Re-read the Ten Commandments in light of this. It really changes things when you don't have to keep a list of rules but do things because you love the other person in the relationship. This relationship is the nature of Christianity.

Start slow with the teachings of Jesus and work your way to the connecting scriptures from there. Pray for understanding and you will be fine.

22:35 And one of them, an expert in religious law, asked him a question to test him: 22:36 “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” 22:37 Jesus said to him, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 22:38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 22:39 The second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 22:40 All the law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”

To put it simply, the bible encourages you to do well, and *discourages* you from doing evil. Therefore, "dos" and "don'ts".

For me, personally, it was very important to read bible stories (I prefer to think of them as "bible histories" because they recount historic events). You can learn a lot about the teachings given in the New Testament by reading and studying the Old Testament. Remember, nearly all, if not all, of the New Testament authors were Jewish. Most of them had also read the books of the Old Testament, and they refer to them frequently.

So, it is not *necessary* for your faith to understand the Old Testament, but it can be *extremely* useful in understanding the New Testament.

Start and concentrate on reading Matthew, Mark, Luke and John in the New Testament. These are the books that tell of Jesus teachings. That is the most important thing for you to know right now. Keep it simple. Jesus lays it all out there for you in those 4 books.

Remember that the dos and don'ts come from ancient times (the Laws, as they are called). Many were there because of the times (Cleanliness Laws for example). Jesus, in the New Testament, said that the Laws were not important, but that loving and helping others was. Pay attention to the intent, not the letter, of the Law. He goes into this several times.

Decide yourself what is important and what is not - what is forest and what is tree. Know why you believe that. Don't let others spoon feed you what they believe, or you will never truly understand. And if anyone tells you to take a 2000 year old, frequently transcribed and edited document literally, RUN, don't walk, to the nearest exit. ;)

Obeying leads to a better life.

Under the Mosaic Law, they knew nothing of bacteria and germs. Yet obeying that law kept them free from many diseases caused by germs and bacteria. Washing hands and body, disposing of waste by burial, not touching dead bodies and purifying rituals to be followed after touching the dead are a few of these things.

Today, family life is self destructing. Obeying Bible commands can not only save family life but make it prosper. Personal life as well as dealing with others is better. "Bad associations spoil useful habits." (1Corinthians 15:33) Every parent has said or thought this about their kids friends whether they knew it was in the Bible or not. We know the application is useful.
