A lot of things can cause meningitis. It's an inflammation of the covering of the brain and spinal cord.

From the description you give of your grandmother, it seems she is highly susceptible to a LOT of things. I have seen plenty of cases of Listeria meningitis in elderly people. Listeria is a common bacteria that lives all over the place and usually can't harm people. But if you are old and sick, Listeria can possibly kill you. Then there's West Nile. That's a virus that can cause meningitis. It is spread by mosquitoes.

If you have meningitis, the doctors will do their best to reduce the swelling, fever and other symptoms. If the meningitis was caused by bacterial infection, then the doctors will administers IV antibiotics, too. Antibiotics can't fix viral infections,

Sometimes, people die from meningitis. Others survive. Depends on how severe the illness was and how healthy the person is. Sick and elderly people have a harder time surviving meningitis.
