My gym teacher says losing weight is simple... The more calories you burn a day than you eat a day is how you lose weight.

Well if I eat a breakfast lunch and dinner that equals around 1200 calories... Does that mean I have to burn that much?

Jesus... I mean one slice of bread has 80 calories...

So... I'm confused. Enlighten me.

Even if you sleep all day, you'll burn 1000 calories.

Your body uses about 1000 calories a day just to keep you alive. Everything you do burns calories, breathing, heart beating, even blinking. So you wouldn't need to burn 1200 calories to lose weight, just burn around 300-500/day to lose weight. Also remember that muscle weighs more than fat, so if you start lifting to lose weight, you may gain at first. But muscles burn calories constantly, all day. So the more muscle you have, the more calories your body will be burning without you having to work as hard.

While it is true that you burn calories while you sleep, exercise is still the best way to burn calories and lose the extra fat! Dieting alone won't eliminate the lipids that hold the fat in your body. It will only shrink them, reducing the fat, but as soon as you start slipping and eating your favorite indulgent foods again, those lipids will fatten up. Exercise burns those lipids! Walk on the treadmill, on an uphill incline for 30 minutes 3-5 days a week and you will improve your weight. Be sure to get your heart rate up!

Your body naturally burns calories by keeping you alive. It's your BMR...(basal metabolic rate)
It's typically at least 1600 for teens, or more depending how in shape you are.
So if you would lie in bed all day and do nothing your still burning 1600 calories!!!! Pretty sweet huh?
