I'm both an American and an Irish citizen. I was basically wondering if I were to join the Irish reserves, would I still be a candidate for conscription if it ever came to that in the USA?

I wasn't aware that the United States recognized dual citizenship. That's the fist thing that gives me pause.

I seem to have bee wrong about that...
Granted wikipedia may not be the final authority... but...

Please note that there's a section on dual citizenship. There's also one on loss of citizenship which indicates that serving in a foreign military results in the loss of your US citizenship.

That having been said, at present there is no US military conscription (draft).

If you join the Irish reserves you might be forced to give up your US citizenship. The US does not recognize dual citizenship, you are either a US citizen or not. That does not mean you still cannot be one, just the US does not recognize it.

Do not worry about the draft. It will never happen for Iraq.

Interesting question. If you were currently on active duty with the Irish, perhaps not. Maybe get a deferment. Non Active, don't know. I wouldn't worry about it because there is no draft and short of nukes going off, unlikely.

I'm pretty certain that they'll ask you to formalize one of your citizenships when you turn 18. It'll be up to you at that point to decide whether you want to be American or Irish, and who you want to fight for.

If you join any type of foreign military unit you will have your American citizenship taken from you.

Only if they ever reinstate the draft.

Yes you could be drafted. It is highly unlikely however.
