Yes, the Christians were just another branch of Judaism until the 4th century when they decided that Jesus was divine. They could no longer call themselves Jews because the belief that God would become human is the ultimate heresy. They probably did suffer more persecution than the Jews though because Jesus declared himself to be "king of the Jews." The king was appointed by the Romans and calling oneself king would be sedition.

We are all One Blood....Acts17:26 and Ephesians 2:13-17...Jesus and all of the Apostles were in fact Jews! A Gentile in Christianity is any unbeliever. Thanks for the Thumbs down.
See Acts Chapters 2, 10 and Paul's trial in Rome as a Roman Citizen in Acts 19! Historically both Jews and Christians were persecuted by the Roman Empire. Christians and Jews still fight for moral causes! The early Church has it's roots in Judaism. They all attended synagogue, until later.
John recorded that he started going to Church on the Lord's Day in Honor of the Resurrection on the 1st Day of the week.

I believe the Romans saw these upstart Christians as a minor sect of Jews. A large part of the early Church was made up of Jewish converts, and I assume the gentile converts would have been lumped with the rest as far as the Romans were concerned.

I was sent this movie by someone and decided to watch it. Go to zeitgeistmovie.com and watch the first part; it will answer all the questions you have about christianity and religion in general.
To answer your question you have to tell me what years you mean. Romans were pagans and Pontius Pilate was the one who killed Jesus. The followers of Jesus weren't Jews because they followed the teachings of Jesus. Before that they were either pagans or Jews.

Many were indeed Jewish by heritage but had converted. However, the number of "gentiles" was ever increasing. Often in the earliest days of the Christian Church they still met in synagogues.

If someone is Jewish, they don't believe Jesus was the messiah, simple as that.
But of course, the first Christians were Jewish, because Christianity only developed some time after Jesus was killed by the Romans.
