During the burning times, pagans went "underground" to avoid being burned alive infront of our children.
It is a natural part of our belief, to keep to ourselves.
I think it stems from the persecution, even now days, that we receive for being "devil-worshipping chicken killers" ha ha

I can see where someone who was not comfortable in a group setting might well choose to be a solitary, or someone who couldn't bear to be alone might seek a coven. This would have to do with social upbringing. Also, whether you can study and learn independently or must be "taught" (told) everything and be double-checked might also relate to social skills.
I chose to be solitary because I was not certain if the Wicca religion was for me. I wanted to find my own path. I was also lucky enough to find a solitary mentor. Covens are the most likely place to find teachers and support.

Speaking as the husband of a wiccan solitaire I can tell you it's because many "covens" are filled with man-hating harpies.
She tried a few but they were all the same. That's why she practices by herself now.

Some people feel that their spirituality is extremely personal and not something they seek to share amongst a group.
I'm not Wiccan, I'm a generic pagan, but I choose to practice alone because I want to do my practices my way using my symbols on my timetable, without worrying about explaining or compromising deeply personal visions, feelings etc.
"Witches don't socialize unless they have to. It's an abundance of dominant personalities... the natural size of a coven is one."

Perhaps it is my upbringing, because I trust no one enough to be in a coven with them. I like being solitary. I don't have anyone else's opinion or belief to contend with. I am aware that I do not fit into any religion anywhere. I know what I believe and what I should be doing in my religion, and I don't want to deal with anyone else. I can accept every religion just as it is without feeling anything negative coming from me or anyone else. The only problem I have with Christians is that they want to kill me. I'm also very shy about my religious practices and beliefs. This is the only aspect of my life that I do not share, except in conversation. It's all mine, no one else shares all aspects of my religion. I don't want anyone to be watching me or listening to me face-to-face, as I don't want to feel I am being judged, criticized, agreed with or disagreed with as it is no one's business.

Solitaires probably are mostly just people who prefer their own company over that of others.
Or, they embrace belief systems unique enough not to put them into much company.
Or, they have deep reservations about some of the practices embraced by their potential compadres.
Covens will have to speak for themselves.

Everytime you accept one of these faiths or cults or call them what ever you want, you are willing to give up part of yourself and take on a new face with some belief that you did not do before.
Want to give up part of your self..go ahead.
