The school nurse "thinks" that there "appears to be" nits in my son's hair. He's been using a shampoo with selenium sulfide 2.5% for well over 10 yrs for dandruff--this stuff also treats ringworm. If it is used to treat ringworm, can lice exist in the treated hair long enough to plant their nits? By the way, he has a doctor's appt in an hr, hopefully I'll get an answer...If not, I'll ask a pharmacist...Thanks!

well, ringworm isn't a parasite, it's a fungus. Ringworm is found on the skin and is treated with anti fungal creams or sprays rather than what would be used for head lice.

You can't have nits without lice that put them there. Usually, you only see nits, so they say, after using lice shampoo which killed the lice and left the nits.

Perhaps the nurse is a nit-wit? If your son have never experienced head lice, he couldn't have nits in his hair. I would confront the nurse with these facts, after consulting a doctor to confirm what I've said.

If it's true that your son perhaps had a scab on his head due to scratching, running into something or other and that's what this nurse mistook for nits, then she, indeed, is a nit-wit. I would call her down on it.

Head lice happens in the best of families and doesn't mean one is unclean, just unlucky.

I've never heard of selenium sulfide being used for lice. Most of the time for lice, you have to buy the special lice shampoo. Ringworm is a fungus and lice are parasites.
