To me it means prepare for the end of the world and the Lord's coming. Put yourself in order to have Him judge you.

Yes, this is for us to go and preach the gospel as John the Baptist did, preparing the way for the Lord by preparing the peoples hearts, planting seeds in good soil with much fruit!

John the Baptist said it just before Jesus came into His public minstry. He was announcing that the Lord, the long-awaited, promised One was finally arriving. It had been a long wait, ever since God promised Adam and Eve and Satan that one would crush the serpent's (Satan's) head.
It means Make way or clear the way for the Lord! He's coming! It's the same message of the church today, except we say it "He's coming back soon!"

When John the Baptist preached this, he baptized people
- they were to believe and become purified/cleansed in order to be able to receive the message ordained by God through
Jesus and the Holy Spirit - the Holy testimony of faith and
salvation/redemption.
