They showed that the Earth orbited around the Sun not the other way round. This Knocked us as being the most important thing in the Universe as everything orbited. This process is continuing even today with the discovery of rocky planets in the "Goldilocks zone" of other stars showing us yet again how ordinary our planet is.

Copernicus was the first person to come out with the theory that the earth revolved around the sun instead of the other way around. He was excommunicated as a heritic. (Church people have always been ignorant.)

They did not.

The church did it's best to made sure that their ideas did not get out and infect the minds of the general people with dangerous thoughts like reality.

It was not until Newton and the 1750s that talking about a heliocentric solar system was not heresy.

The church wanted to kill them because they spoke the truth. Many people still viewed the earth as the center at that time, but many accepted it was 'no longer' flat.
