Please remember that the military exists for the sole purpose of fighting America's wars. No branch of the service and no individual member is immune from that risk.

Still, the Navy and Air Force are "safer" in that they are not combat infantry troops as the Marine Corps and Army are. Navy personnel are primarily stationed on ships in the Gulf and contribute air support.

Give it a shot. I joined at age 29.

Why do you want to join?If it's for the benefits, you are joining for the wrong reasons.Who will take care of your child during a deployment, the Navy doesn't work around your life to make it easy for you.
You are considering joining a military organization and are worried about getting killed?I'm not sure but my best guess is that the Navy is not for you.

I was a Navy Recruiter and only enlisted one guy who was over 30. He was 32.

You mentioned a kid. If your a single parent you must sighn over custody to someone else to be enlistment eligable.

The possibility of ending up in a combat zone exists. If your not prepared to accept that reality , don't join. We don't want you.

First I would like to thank you for wanting to serve your country. If your wanting to stay out of Iraq or the front line. You may wish to consider the Air Force. It is more like a regular 9 to 5 job depending on the career path you choose. They are also a lot more family friendly. it may be a littl eharder to get into to, but it's worth it. The testing ahs a higher standard.

Joining the navy can mean that you can work in a ship galley, maintenance, flight controller the list goes on, lots of jobs out there that arent combat based, talk to your recruiter!

As far as I am aware all of the services train in linguistics at Monterrey. Only the diplomats and the spooks do Virginia. I would push for a green branch myself. There is more room for advancement in the Army or the USMC. As a lame old grunt I would like to see you pick the army. I think you will find that the education that you will have available to you is first rate in any branch of the service. The general pecking order among vets is Army and Marine Corps fighting for first with Navy second and the Air Force trying to pretend that they really are part of the armed forces (grin). Which ever branch you choose linguistics is a wonderful field and you will have many opportunities. Both within the service and on civi side. A good friend of mine went to work for the UN and another spends a few days a month translating technical articles from German to English and relaxes the rest of the time. His whole job is over the computer. Good luck were ever you go.

Why do you want to join at this age and with a child? It sounds like you are running away from something.
