I've read a few different things about layering and I need to know what's correct. I live in the Denver area so sun protection is really important! Any how I've read that if you layer two levels of SPF, for example an SPF 45 sunscreen and then SPF 15 foundation you will only have the protection of the SPF 15. I've also heard it's the other way around, that you would have the higher level of protection. Thank you!

anything above 30 SPF is redundant, you get no more protection. In addition, SPF 30 means you have 30 MINUTES of protection, not hours by any means, and after that thirty minutes you need to re-apply to gain any further protection. I think sunscreens are a notorious waste of money and time....I use a sunblock containing zinc oxide, it gives me two hours of protection with each application when I must be out in the sun, but being very fair skinned I tend to avoid doing it whenever possible and I wear protective clothing too.

It's been shown through numerous research studies that SPF 15 blocks 93% of harmful rays and SPF 30 blocks 97% any SPF above that has not been shown to have any greater affect. It is actually thought that higher SPF's tend to have more harmful effects because people feel that they can then stay outside far longer without any repercussions which isn't true. I'd stick with one layer of 30, so to get full protection, but not clog pores which may happen with 2 layers. Then reapply every few hours as necessary.

Spf only helps you stay unburned for as long as your skin can normally handle it plus the additional time. If you burn easy, you may only have the 15-45 minutes extra till you start feeling the red from the sun!

OK this is from my dermatologist: He uses his kids spf 45 sun screen, it is waterproof and doesn't get in your eyes. No fancy schmancy stuff from the dermatologist although he offered to sell me the expensive stuff If I wanted to waste my money. He said that would be as efficient as anything you could get anywhere and works great. Words from a dermatolagist in Los Angeles Ca
