It can stay on for up to 7 years.
3 years ago I paid off 3 credit cards and they won't take them off yet. I've been sending the 3 bureaus copies of the receipts where I paid everything off which helped change the status to closed, but they still appear on the report.
You can 'dispute' that an item shouldn't be on the report online.

It won't disappear from your credit report for several years, however it will begin appearing as "satisfied", or "paid as agreed", or some other description pertaining to how the account was paid off.

If you have erroneous information appearing on your report, you should send Equifax a letter demanding that they remove the error.

7 years and 180 days from the date of delinquency. If the delinquency was two years ago and you paid it off this year, it would fall off in 5 years. Paying does not re-start the reporting period.
