Electric cars if you can afford them. Their carbon foot print has been dumped off on the electric power generating plants. The problems with electric cars is that to get the same range as an IC car you need very expensive batteries, a lot of heavy batteries and you may have to wait 6+ hours to recharge while travelling. If cheaper they are short range and slow.

By using a steam engine to power an onboard generator which would keep the batteries charged, it would be easy to have the range of an IC car and get well over 60 mpg of fuel, since 80-90% of the driving would be as a plug-in EV and the steam-engine/generator would not run all the time. The fuel tank could also allow for going 400 mi, before refuelling, but upon arrival it could be driven as a plug-in EV again.

Its footprint on the economy would be less than IC or EVs due to less expensive parts, lower pollution, lower fuel use and longer operating life. For more e-mail beesidemeusa@yahoo.co.uk and ask about steam-electric hybrids

No car has a 'good' carbon foot-print!

Look instead at whether you really NEED to travel 12,000 miles a year EVERY year!!!

Choose the car that doesn't drive so bad that you need to take a 767 on a 18 hour flight and back to say you've had a holiday twice a year.

Lets do the BIG ones first!

Most modern cars fit your bill, most modern passenger jets however burn as much (or more) fuel as they ever did. Change your lifestyle NOT your car.

If you hang on to the car that you have rather than keep swapping it in for a new model, every five minutes, this too will help. Don't CHANGE your car LOOK AFTER IT!

The 2007 Mini-Cooper D gets 64.2 MPG. Diesel engines are about 20% more effecient than gasoline. The Toyota Prius on it's own possibly has a slightly smaller carbon foot print, but the current manufacturing process of the batteries it uses has a larger enivormental impact. I don't know if that fit's the average family car, but I know familes that insist on driving them.

my toyota aygo has the lowest carbon emmisions of a fuel car which is the same a a prius. It can do above 60 mpg and itsnt too bad for space and stuff...it would only really be suitable for a small family as even me on my own its a struggle to do the weekly shop with that sill little boot

Selecting from the world market, you can't beat the mini-cooper.

However it's really a more practical city car, not so great if you have things to schlep or a big family to move around.

On the US market? Your hybrids... and of course, the electric car that never was allowed on the market.

The one with the lowest cost, because energy costs money and a cheap car cannot have used a lot of expensive energy and still be cheap.
