Ecological footprints are a HUGE deal!! But of course there are bigger issues its just some people/countries need to reduce the amount of recources they use or they will be nothing left for future generations.

WHERE DID YOU GET ALL THAT FROM!!! Global Warming exists!! There is so much science backing it up now that what your saying i would say is wrong.
And why are you on this section if you don't think global warming is real?

I suppose the Hummer dealer who had all the new hummers on his lot vandalized by environmentalists has something against those environmentalists.
I suppose the lumberjacks injured while cutting spiked trees have something something against the environmentalists who put the spikes in the trees.
I suppose the Woman who had her expensive fur coat spattered with paint or blood by environmentalists has something against those environmentalists.
I suppose the land developer who can no longer develop the land he owns because the environmentalists got a Court order stopping the development to save animal habitat has something against environmentalists.
In short, people who have been hurt or lost money or property due to the actions of environmentalists have good reason to have something against environmentalists.

Environmentalism scares the bejeesus out of people who haven't faced the sorry facts. Your first reply is wroth noting. There have been some rash actions by environmentalists, that's true...
But when you consider how rash it was for the human race to crank up the nuclear industry without pausing to figure out what to do with the wastes, one can understand environmentalists' passions.
We need environmental consciousness if we are going to survive the next century.
I hope the ignorant folks who either think there are no problems or that the problems will solve themselves would stand down and let us get on with the work.
We could actually have an environmentally sound economy, though to hear so many anti-environmentalists talk, that would seem a contradiction.
When they hassle you, point out Teddy Roosevelt. He was unquestionably a conservative, and unquestionably supported preserving nature. When you think about it, that makes sense --conserve being the operating word in there.

Too many people think that "environmentalists" are some kind of monolithic group that all think the same thing and believe in the same causes. These people also tend to want to categorize everybody into neat little groups like liberal and conservative.
That you say you want to "become" illustrates this to some degree. At what point between recycling your aluminum cans and riding a Greenpeace Kodiak raft after a whaling vessel does one go from normal citizen to "environmentalist"? Just do your part to support whatever causes you feel deserving and don't worry about labels and having to defend the "enviro-nuts".

Most people don't hate someone who claims to be an environmentalist. The right wing pundits like Limbaugh use inflammatory language to demean those who care about the environment. Some use examples of the far left factions like ELF to describe all environmentalists.
However, find a part of the environment you choose to support and devote yourself to this goal. Ignore those who criticize and recognize they are being part of the problem, not part of the solution. Finally, believe in what you are doing and ignore the moronic.

Let me say this much...don't let the actions of other effect how you feel. Stand strong on your beliefs. We each only get one life to live how we chose. We each have a chance to make a difference in areas we feel need it. If we all felt the world needed fixing in just a couple areas what a different world we would live in eh? But of course this is not the case. So do your part...follow your passions and fight for what you believe. There will always be negativity coming at you no matter which path you chose. As there is always two sides to every coin (including topics like the environment ~ it's not a black and white issue) . This is life, it is up to you to chose how you will react eh? Make the choice to stay positive and fight for your dream.

Greetings Darth Kreia
Basically.....
It's the ostrich symdrome in full effect. People are deeply frightened of the Worldwide Effects of Global Warming.
Therefore they will go to almost length to deny it's very existence. That being said those Environmentalists who speak the truth about the situation are scorned and derided by the frightened masses.
Sad But True.
Listen to univee His answer was nearly prefect. And great point about Teddy Roosevelt.

People generally hate sanctimonious moralizers and don't want to be told that what they're doing is wrong. Same reason people hate Christian fundamentalists. "I wanna drive my SUV and not have to feel bad about it, so I hate the environmentalist who tells me I shouldn't be doing that." Well, nuts to those people, I say. The vast majority of environmental activism isn't directed at individuals, anyway - it's usually directed at governments or corporations. It's just the generally environmentalist zeitgeist which results in enviro-flack that causes the guilt, not specific diatribes (by, say, Greenpeace) against SUVs or what-have-you.
I'm not sure how you "become" an environmentalist, there isn't exactly a membership card.

Just keep sitting on the fence until the rest of the world makes it popular.
If you don't have the conviction to do something without justifying why people like or dislike it, then don't do it. Ask yourself first why you want ot be an environmentalist, and what it means to you. If you can answer honestly, then screw the people who don't agree.

I think allot of people are afraid of change and like simplicity. They don't want to think about where their bottled water came from before they bought it or where the bottle will go when they are done with it. They want to continue throwing the bottle in the trash and not recycling because that's what they have always done. People don't want to be reminded that they are being short sited and that their actions have an effect on others.

There are many different types of environmentalist. You can be the kind that takes action and actually accomplishes something, or you can be the kind that demands other people live as you think is best for them while doing nothing for the environment.
Which one are you going to be?
