Not really as I like most types of Metal (except Nu-Metal), Jazz, country, Rock and Classical.
What Black Metal bands are you a fan of? My favorites are Marduk and Burzum.

Yeah I guess it can influence you. I mean who want to be in church and get shunned there for listening to your favorite noise. Thats not the only reason why I don't go to church but its been one of them because I am not into that sort of manipulating. If its not the music I listen too that someone won't like about me and want to change then I figure whats next? I have liked my share of classical too.but to the people that don't appreciate my classical they usually don't hate me just for the music I am playing. Some people not only hate classical as a sound but as what they envision it to be in their heads which is sometimes the reminder of all the not so pleasant baggage that can be associated with the history of people that have white skin. I guess that the way that those two types of music get reaction doesn't have too much to do with the actual music or the person who plays the music but because someone doesn't like it than they will decide to give the individual crap for listening to it based on how they have decided to feel about it.

I'm a Christian, but I'll listen to most anything. I don't like Rap, Country, and I usually don't like Techno, but I'll listen to classical, classic rock, jazz, death metal, speed metal, hard rock, etc. I think it's more or less your musical influences are based mostly off of emotions. I think emotions can be influenced by religion though, but inside religion emotions vary. Interesting study, it would be fun to go more into depth with it.

I enjoy both heavy metal and classical music, and this isn't just a superficial infatuation but an actual deep interest.
I have to confess I'm not much into death metal, though. I prefer power metal which started with bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest and now progressed into Helloween, Sonata Arctica and Nightwish.
As for classical music, I have a strong preference for Bach, but I like almost every composer, except Stravinsky. I have BBC2 - 100 Best Tunes loaded on my MP3 radio to which I'm listening right now.

It's probably true in my own personal case. I know that my church's use of classical music has tended to associate that musical genre with spirituality to me. Many classical works are, in fact, religious in nature. However, many others are secular, and I realize that. But I grew up singing classical works for my church, so yes, the music is often linked in my mind with my religious background. If I hear certain pieces, I can sometimes remember being inside the church performing them, and also remember subtle things like the scent of church incense or the images in the stained glass windows. However, when I'm not listening to classical, I'm often listening to classic rock, and I'm not sure what to make of that in religious terms. I don't necessarily associate rock with any particular religious belief.

I like rock music but my religion is undecided. I believe in a god - not a god described by any religion that exists... but I do believe in a higher power. My favourites are Metallica, at a big distance from any other band in my top 10 :D Most of my friends listen to the same kind of music like me, and have the same religious ideas.

I'm a Catholic convert and so is my husband ... we do listen to 'classical' music on occasion, but mostly we listen to what I'd call 'hippie rock' (old rock from the 60s and 70s) ... plus we listen to 'Celtic' music when it's good ... so I think that the 'music we listen to' is more 'the time we live in and when we grew up' while our 'religion' was chosen after 'study and decision' ...

I used to be into rap and soul music but once I got saved I stopped listening to all that..mostly because it glorifies possessions, sex, idolatry, vulgar languange or money in some way. That sort of music and really any genre that doesnt glorify God vexes my spirit. I can do jazz on occasion but listening to some good gospel gives me all the peace I need.

You mean, does my CD collection fit my religious stereotype?
Well, I am a Satanist and I do admittedly own every album put out by Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden. I guess I have no explanation though for my albums from Tom Jones or Yma Sumac. Then again, some people would consider that the kind of music they'd play in hell!

some people let their tastes be influenced by religion because they think some genres are "bad influences."
But there is Christian death metal out there and I'm sure many agnostics love classical and operatic music (I sure do).
I think your statement can be true, but there are too many varieties of musical taste and spiritual beliefs to generalize about the subject.
