I have been doing some research and have pretty much settled on something by Logitech. Beyond that, I have discovered that the two models that fall within my price range are the Harmony 520 and 550. Can anyone tell me which of these is the better choice ?

I have an older JVC tv, a newer Sony home theatre system, a dual Yamaha tape deck, a Sony boom box, a Magnavox DVD/VCR player, and a Rogers digital cable box. I don't have a cd player yet but that will coming soon, I hope. The Sony theatre system came with a pretty decent universal remote but the problem is that it doesn't have designated buttons for the designated buttons on the cable remote (colour-coated menu buttons).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you can suggest something cheaper but just as reliable, I would be even more appreciative.

Thanks a lot !

EXCELLENT QUESTION!

A lot of my clients have been asking me to replace the Harmony remotes they bought on their own (before they knew about me or my services) "with something that works better."

I recommend the Universal Remote Control (that's the actual brand name) MX-350 (or higher). They don't require a computer to program in most cases (unlike the Harmony in every case), they're built better and are more flexible in the way they can be programmed.

No, they DON'T have Harmony's sort of cool "Help" button, but they have custom macro capabilities that outshine the Harmony.

Check out reviews of both on remotecentral-dot-com.

Disclaimer: I do not work for either company.

Good luck, and let me know how it goes!

P.S. The Harmony is more expensive and some say harder to program corrrectly.

The 550 is the newer of the 2. I would go with the 550. But if cost is a concern, go with the cheaper one. They'll both accommodate your needs.

Harmony is not the typical remote control, and you may have some getting used to. It is setup on your computer and synced with the USB cable.

The main difference is that the functions are based on activity (macro's) rather than direct input. You say "watch movie", and based on the equipment you have... it will send out all the settings to enable you to watch a movie.

It is a highly efficient way of taking control of your system, once you get the hang of it... you won't look back.

It really depends on your budget. Harmony are always popular and pretty simple to use. I recently bought one from Tigerdirect.com for $49 and the setup was extremely easy. Plug into your PC with an USB cable and have your device model numbers ready. Tigerdirect has had a recent sale on these remotes, not the latest model, but the one I got was model 659.

I second the Harmony. It is a ACTIVITY based remote, not device. By selecting "DVD" the remote controls the BluRay player, but the volume affects the receiver. When watching TV - the remote controls the Sat receiver, but the volume affects the TV. This is because the different buttons are programmed to the activity, not the device. It sounds complicated to explain but the Website takes you through the setup and 98% of the things work right away.
