I am not so interested in hearing about catholics and saint worship, but a real example of idolatry. Worshiping of Idols was a big thing back in the day. I need to find a modern example of something that is that important.
For instance, did they worship idols because they believed in other gods or because the rest of society did. That's what I am driving at.
Opinions?

everyday: Or when a Bishop allows himself to be crowned "Vicar of Christ" by an emperor? Another good example of a person becoming their own god?

Idolatry does not have to be saint worship or bowing to a statue, etc. Idolatry is anything that takes 1st place in your life over the Lord. It can be even something that appears good. There is nothing basically wrong with loving sports, but when attending a sports event gives you more satisfaction then worshiping God, then sports can become an idol.
I am a musician who loves the Lord- but I gotta tell ya, sometimes in my Christian walk, I have loved music over the Lord. My music became my idol- my "service" to God became much more important then the God I claim to say I am serving. Does that help?

God’s people also refrain from idolizing the world’s stars of entertainment and sports Sexual immorality is another form of idolatry Greed is inordinate or rapacious desire, and covetousness is greediness for anything belonging to someone else. Jesus warned against covetousness and spoke of a covetous rich man who could not benefit from his wealth at death and was in the sad state of not being “rich toward God.” (Luke 12:15-21) Paul appropriately counseled fellow believers: “Deaden . . . your body members that are upon the earth as respects . . . covetousness, which is idolatry.”—Colossians 3:5. Those obsessed with love for money Therefore 1 john 5:21 Little children, guard yourselves from idols.

Whenever someone puts ANYTHING ahead of following Christ, then that thing is an idol that is worshipped more than God.
The most common example is when people rationalize their behavior even though it is against the two great commandments of loving your God with all of your heart, mind, soul and strength and your neighbor as yourself.
When people state that they do not follow a religion but would rather worship God and live a life according to how they interpret the Bible, they have made themselves into god.
No, Don, the Pope does not make himself god by accepting the title Vicar of Christ. Jesus told Peter to feed His lambs, thereby making Peter his substitute and representative (vicar). It appears that you have a problem with Jesus giving authority to man to guide other men.

They worshiped idols because they where deceived.
We today worship idols, we worship the serpent (aka the devil, the red dragon, Satan)
Read Numbers 21:4-9 then read Revelation 13:14-18.
Now read John 3:14 did not Moses make an image of a fiery serpent and told his people to look upon it (worship) and that they would not die if they looked upon it ?

A pastor friend of mine made a great point one day as we were having lunch. This was some time ago. He said that he went to a Michael Jackson concert (HEY, I said it was some time ago). They were raising their hands in the air, moved to tears, screaming his name, passing out when he touched them...Sure seems like idol worship to me. If they were doing the same to worship the One who created him, and the rest of us, then it wouldn't have been idol worship.
