I have a lot of anxiety about everything - called generalized anxiety disorder. I've been going to different counsellors for years for help and take anti-anxiety medication (that is okay to use with alcohol in moderation). Neither of them work. I'm still very nervous in bed, and just relaxing, going with the flow, and enjoying it is extremely difficult for me.

Can anyone suggest a good drink to relax me and loosen me up a little? I tried 1 -2 wine coolers and that helps a little bit, but not much. I need something a little stronger. Please help because I have a high sex-drive, wanting it so badly, but I have trouble letting go of my inhibitions.

Anxiety normally involves worrying about something in the future. The awful physical sensations add to our feelings that something is not right and we need to be afraid. We scare ourselves. If your current anti-anxiety med isn't working well enough, try something new (I take Cymbalta - takes care of the GAD and the depression that often goes hand in hand). Anyway, watch the alcohol intake - stay to moderation - but a very good drink is a Washington Apple. Tastes wonderful and will totally relax you. Remember though - alcohol is a depressant. Ya don't want to be falling asleep in the sack!!! And besides - ever think that some of those anxiety feelings are just "excitement"? Let go - you won't lose control - I promise.

Alchol is a depressant, while small doses can reduce inhibitions , it's not really the answer. If you want a drink because you like the taste, like a wine, or really nice single malt, then goon on-ya. Perhaps it;s not inhibitions, but the little voice saying your partner is wrong for you.

In the meantime, relax, play some solitaire "so to speak", and find the one who will make you relax. It will be so much better when its "natural".

A good bottle of wine, red, white, or blush, shared with your partner should help you relax.

Wine coolers no longer contain real wine, they are mostly now just alcopops; sweet flavored malt beverages.

Real wine would be slightly more potent. I find I enjoy a nice mellow buzz from drinking wine.

Please be careful not to take it too far with alcohol as a social lubricant, it can be a slippery slope. Alcohol doesn't change your behavior or capacity for behavior, it just lowers your inhibitions. You know what you're doing while you are drinking, you just don't care.

Good luck to you and enjoy.

If you have anxiety, you should see a psychiatrist about getting a prescription for a psychotropic medication. If you have tried anti-anxiety medication in the past and it didn't work, you should either try a different med or keep taking it a little while longer. Most psychotropic medications could take up to 6 weeks to start to become effective. Also, different meds work for different people. If you tried one and it didn't work, keep trying different ones until one works.

As far as what to drink, I would try something with a little less sugar than wine coolers. Maybe wine or scotch. Although you should never drink while taking medication.

Drink something sweet and warm going down like an Amoretto or Gran Marnier. They are very pleasant, serve in a short cocktail glass with 3-4 ice cubes, drink slowly. You will glow, feel loose and less troubled for the moment. Having said that, perhaps its your companion, who is making you uptight?

You are going to end up with stronger alcohol and a drinking problem. Try other relaxing tips. A hot shower , candle light , your favorite music, what ever works for you.
