I've been invited to a formal event, but the problem is I really don't have a clue about wearing formal clothing. Especially how high the trousers should be. You see, I normally wear very baggy clothing, which hangs loose, so it feels very awkward wearing trousers that are quite high. So, how high should they be, just below the navel, or what????

Trousers or slacks should be work right under the navel. The fit should be comfortable, but by no means baggy. Visit a department store and ask to be measured and fitted. You will be able to then purchase trousers/slacks in a correct size and they will not be baggy.

If it were that formal a gentleman would cover his waist, (the meeting between trousers and shirt,) with a small band of material called a cumber-bun. It is normally made of satin and fits around the waist and is secured at the back with a hook and eye and this covers up the unsightly paunches of the heavier gentleman. Most good tailors or gentleman's suit stores will have them.
This way it does not really matter how high or low the trousers are, the band is several inches wide so one can be comfortable with them at any height.

Sure, you don't need to "hike" up your dress pants. Just wear them on or about the navel. Just check the "crouch" area and see if it droops down too low. It will be a natural fit but not hug your "you knows". Anyway, hope this helps and ask for help if you are purchasing a new suit. The sales people will help you.. Hey, why don't you go to a tux place and just rent a tux and look your best!! They have associates there to help you get a proper fit! See ya!

If the affair is formal and you are required to wear a tux, then you need to go to the tux shop and get measured. There is nothing worse than an ill fitting suit. You would do well to retire your childish manner of dressing and step into the adult world anyway.

Just below the navel is good. You can rent a suit and they'll get it fitted the way it should be, or if you want to buy a suit (every man should have one good suit) head to a dept store and they'll fit it for you. Do it soon, because you can't walk out with it the same day.

The folks from whom you rent or buy your tux (which is required for formal events, I hope you knew) will fit you appropriately from necktie to shoes and everything in between--except your undies. You may leave yourself in their very capable hands with nary a worry.

:)

Clearly it's under the arm pits for formal dress.
