You do not have to worry about that. If you are going to have any major surgery with any possibility of losing blood, blood transfusion preparation is usually included in the doctor's preoperative plans.
Expect that prior to surgery, a blood sample will be taken from you for different blood tests and that will include blood typing and blood grouping. Knowing your blood type and group is an important part of preoperative tests so nothing to worry.
Before surgery, you will be required to sign an informed consent. Before signing it, someone will explain and discuss with you the important aspects of the procedure that you need to know. A subject over the blood transfusion would be included then.
As you know, possible blood loss during a major surgery is always considered thus compatible blood for transfusion should always be available before surgery (except in emergency cases). If special arrangements or considerations are needed with regards to blood transfusions, an issue will be resolved and have a compatible blood readily available by any way.
The compatible blood are kept in hospital blood bank until needed. If you need to be transfused, the crossmatched blood will be requested and given to you.

Don't worry. They will check your blood type first. They will also check to see if you allow for blood transfusion to be performed. Some religions will not accept a blood transfusion.
Hope this helped you.

They will figure out your blood type before you go in for surgery when they do pre-op tests. If you're very concerned, talk to your doctor before your surgery to make sure this is done.
Good luck.

Generally the doctors will have you typed and cross matched with all the other pre-op stuff. If they didn't and they are unsure of your exact type you will recieve O negative which is the universal donor. Anyone can get Oneg safely.

They'll do a blood test as part of your pre-surgical work-up to determine your blood type. You should find out what your blood type is.
In short, don't worry...They'll figure it out for you.

i agree with all of the above answers....and not only that, but if they suspected you were to lose a lot of blood, they could get you to donate ahead of time so you could get your own blood back.....
