Absolutely, the company the debt was with should update the credit agencies but sometimes they take a while to do that. You can write each of the 3 agencies a letter stating the debt was paid off and showing evidence that it was. They will then contact the debt company to confirm and update your credit report.

The creditor should report the debt as paid. If they don't after 2 months, you can send a dispute letter to the credit bureau with a copy of your paid receipt.

Go to http://www.annualcreditreport.com and order your 3 free credit reports.
On the reports they will have dispute information. Dispute the account as paid. The company has 30 days to update otherwise the account will be deleted.

If you are late it will show that as part of your credit history for 7 years but unless you are 30 days late it doesn't show at all.
They won't change your history if it is true, if not true you will need to ask them to correct the information.

You need to understand the whole credit reporting process. Go to www.ftc.gov for a full explanation.

You can't get it "off" the report. It will still be there as an old problem, but should show up as "paid".
