Hi!

It sounds like your kitten was weaned a little early! How old was he when you got him? If he was 8 weeks old or younger, this is surely the case!

We rescued a kitten who was 5 weeks old, and she did this a lot of first.

They do tend to grow out of it a little, but some cats do this all their lives.

If you don't want him to be doing this to you, gently move him away from you or walk away. He will eventually catch on. You could also try to give him a substitute, such as a piece of clothing, a toy or even something moist like a lettuce leaf.

It's a comfort reflex. A lot of young kittens do it and most grow out of it. One of my cats used to go to sleep sucking my finger like a dummy when he was a baby.

On another note if you are giving your kitten milk make sure it is proper cat milk and not human milk. Human milk makes most cats ill.

Cats only suck like that when they have been taken from their mother's too early. Usually they suck on clothing or towels. Never heard of a hand before. The latest a kitten should be rehomed is 8 weeks. 6 or earlier is far too young.

it is a comfort habit, kittens dont only suckle at their mothers for milk they do it for comfort ( like a baby with a dummy ) it is natural and completely harmless,he may grow out of it but i think its cute and wouldnt want him to grow out of it, if you want him to stop then every time he doest it pull him off and say no and if he does it again put him on the floor and dont let him back up on your knee for a few minutes that is a basic training programme that cures most habits

I had a kitten who did that to my eye lid. My vet said to give it a piece of lettuce and let it suck the moisture out of it.. It worked and I stopped getting Hickeys on my eye lids!

I've had several rescued orphans who tried to nurse on various things. One sucked on the bottom of her paw, one sucked on a square of fleecy fabric, and one wanted to suck on my earlobe but made do with a knitted blanket.

Your kitty was probably taken from his mother too soon. Try redirecting him to something else when he tries to suck on you.
