Maggie just had her dewclaws removed. She wears a cone, but can just lick the ends of her bandages, and we're worried she'll manage to pull the bandages off.. her incision isn't healing very quickly so she has to leave them on for a couple days...

I wanted to respond to the schmuck who said getting her dewclaws was unnecessary.. before you start criticizing my decisions as a dog-parent, be advised that her dewclaws were VERY loose, and growing in a circular fashion.. we couldn't cut them because her claws are black. She was getting them caught on everything, and I was worried she was going to rip one off, which i am told can happen to some energetic dogs, like ours.
Watch your uninformed comments, and also you have a picture of a dog with trimmed ears? For someone who is against unnecessary surgeries, look at the pictures you endorse first!

And for the record, we were having her spayed at the same time anyhow. So it was not sedation and pain for nothing.

You can try bitter apple or pepper sauce and see if that works. Some dogs like them both.

If the cone is still allowing her to lick her legs, you can try putting a flat collar or two below the base of the cone to make it ride up higher. Some dogs have long necks and the cones just aren't long enough.

You can also try putting another layer or two of the self-adhesive veterinary wrap or medical tape. If you wrap it around and then twist the end and tape just the end to her fur, it makes it much more difficult for her to get it off. Just use medical tape from a first aid kit for this purpose.

Why did you have dew claws removed on this puppy? It is totally unnecessary and you have put the dog under sedation and caused it pain for nothing. Dew claws are generally removed when a dog is 2 to 3 days old.

Try either Bitter Apple (in pet stores), Binaca Breath Spray or some nasty tasting mouth wash.
Good luck - poor pup!

Bitter apple is a harmless but bad tasting stuff that you can find at pet places.

Bitter Apple works well. Also, at the clinic I work at, we have a product called "No-Bite." That works well too.
