We keep shoes or houseshoes with the hard soles on our kids. We to have hard wood and tile through out the house. It helps keep their feet clean and warm and ready to go at a moments notice.

In my house, we have all hardwood throughout. I leave my daugher barefoot for most of the day. During the morning if her feet are cold I'll put her slippers on her. She staying in the walker too much and now at almost 18 months she walks perfectly on tiptoes. When she runs it's solid foot and the more tired she gets the more the puts her feet all the way down. There aren't anymore germs on your floor than there are in the air in your house, so that first answer is for the birds. Your toddler is more likely to hurt his/her head on those wood and tile floors than his/her feet. If the kid doesn't want shoes on, don't put them on...if he wants them on, put em on. It's really up to you. But AAP reccomends that kids learn to walk barefooted because it gives them a better feel of what they are actually walking on rather than just the feel of the soles of shoes. Good luck!

My daughter and her family moved in with us for a time. We had to put a gate up at the foot of our stairs so she would not climb the stairs and get hurt. However this did not stop her, she would just put her toes in the gate, climb like crazy and flop over on the other side and run quickly up the stairs before she was caught. My daughter found out that when she was wearing shoes she could not climb the gate. So, now she wears shoes from the time she gets out of bed till the time she goes back to sleep.

All thoughs slipper socks everyone is mentioning you can get at Landsend.com They have a non-skid bottom and they are great for little feet. They come in many colors and patterns. My kids lived in those for most of the first 3 years. Good luck and happy toddler life. =>

Carrying germs on shoes from the outside to your inside is one of the biggest ways germs get inside of your floors. I have been taking mine off at the door since as long as I can remember. I teach everyone that enters my home to leave them at the door. I have never had a problem with anyone not doing it.
Anyway, my five year old does the same thing. Ever since I can remember, she has been lining up the shoes at the front door. Her tiny ones next to my 71/2's. Its something that stuck with her since she first started wearing shoes.

My little one hates to have her shoes on inside the house. Are you worried about your child's foot development? If so, you could try those slipper socks that have non-skid rubber grippies on the bottom. Otherwise, as long as they're good sturdy shoes (not flip-flops) it's probably not an issue. After all, don't kids who go to day care have to keep their shoes on all day?

I have a one year old and we just wear slipper socks around the house. It keeps his feet warm on the colder floors and it also gives him traction so he is not sliding all over the place. When we go out we wear shoes.

I think its a good idea to let children run around barefoot as ofter as possible.
Don't worry about the wooden floors, just make sure they are not wearing socks for safety sake.
A Little bit of dust or dirt never did any of my kids any harm!!!

If we aren't going anywhere, then I leave her barefoot unless she wants shoes on. If you are worried about the floors being cold, you could try slipper socks or there are some really cute slippers out there.

Actually, your toddler would be better with bare feet or, if it's too cold, slipper socks(those socks with the little rubber things on them to keep them from slipping). Most pediatricians say that bare foot walking is best for toddlers.
