I was at an ice cream social for the local homeless shelter I volunteer at.

MamaBear: Actually, single malt scotch sounds like it might go well, depending on which brand. A little Laphroaigh over vanilla sounds good.

Ice cream is OK; but if he asks you if you want a pink popsicle, JUST SAY NO!

Why would you even consider this a problem. You accepted a small token of esteem (appreciation? respect?) from a fellow human being and that is that.

Just because someone chooses to believe in a higher power - or not, for that matter - doesn't mean they have abandoned their humanity.

Humans are social beings and as such perform random acts of kindness out of maintaining or even improving the social structure as a whole. That said, the priest wasn't trying to change your mind about whether there is a God per se - but rather to acknowledge your existence and the fact that you do good works for others - regardless of your beliefs.

The correct response - was, is and always will be a sincere, "Thank you very much."

Why would that be wrong? You went to an ice cream social. The priest was handing out ice cream. You were entitled to the ice cream.
I am Jewish and a priest hands me ice cream at an ice cream social I am snatchin that bowl from his hands unless it is some disgusting flavor. LOL
That would be like asking "Because most of the population of the United States says they are Christian is it ok for me to live here if I am not?"

No, it was not wrong. The priest was handing out ice cream, nothing holy about ice cream.

I am not an Atheist. I am one of Jehovah's Witnesses. Whenever you are not sure about something having to do with God put a Godly aspect to it to see if it is a Biblical thing. That will tell you if it is wrong of not.

I don't think so. You did not lie or do anything unethical to get it from what you say. The difference between an atheist and someone religious is only that an atheistic looks at underlying form- Any assertation that religion is necessary to morals is an affront to principles.. and outside of morals/principles, what has religion given us? Fear of punishment or hope for reward after death? Besides, nothing unethical about giving or taking ice cream!

ABSOLUTELY not!!! I am unsure of what I believe in or if I am an atheist, but I also have had a wonderful relationship with an old neighbour of mine when I lived in N.H., He was a retired Catholic priest. He was so giving (almost to a fault) and so nice and helpful to us (a young couple from away). He understood how I felt/didn't feet about GOD and was quite cool with it, he still wanted to be our friend and help us out when we needed it. So then when he needed help, we was right there for him every time, regardless of his or our faiths.

To an atheist there is no GOD so there is no one can be belonging to GOD.

Hence you took Ice cream from a man wearing a black coat and white shirt.

What is the problem.

Why are you bringing a non existence entity to your faith of non-believing?

No. He is not expecting you return complete devotion for ice cream. Also it is alright to accept things for free from nice people without there being any alerterior motives involved.

I don't think so. Just because you socialized with someone who has different beliefs than you doesn't make it wrong. Especially if you only accepted and ice cream from him.

No. He was probably trying to do something nice for you, since you are one of the volunteers.

It's only wrong if you put something gross on it, like single-malt scotch or anchovies!

Not even athiests are THAT nasty!

If you are offered ice cream you should take it...even if it was from a priest. Refusing ice cream would just be sad =[
