In my area, there are female missionaries. I've seen both male and female missionaries, but have spoken more often to female LDS missionaries than to their male counterparts.

I salute the two former sister missionaries that have responded to this question. I also differ with Feral that they are usually unattractive. Far from the truth!
I just attended a stake conference in my area and out of the twenty or so male missionaries present there were only two sister missionaries in attendance. They were pure, wholesome, and most attractive.
When I first joined the Church in Fayetteville, North Carolina, in 1965 there were also sister missionaries assigned the city. They were easy on the eyes too.
I believe when a person is filled with righteousness and the Spirit of God their outward appearance magnifies to the better.

Hate to be the one to admit it, but it is usually the ..... non-beautiful ones that go on missions. If they hit 21 and are in Utah, they are considered to be old maids. Some of my girl friends get sideways glances at church because they are over 20 and have the audacity to not marry as soon as they dropped "teen" from their age. Seriously some people get married straight out of highschool here, but most wait until within a week of the man getting back from his mission.
It is sad, but to answer your question, they DO have girl missionaries, but in most cases you would probably think they were guys with dresses on. Think about a place like Utah, where inbreeding was very common, then picture the kid of girl that could not get married in a place like this because nobody would.

I was a lady missionary too.
You've already gotten some good answers...so I'll just add that generally us girls were assigned the "safest" areas to go knocking on doors.
We were assigned one area that was pretty ghetto for a while, until my mission president found out how often the police were needed in that neighborhood, and then we got switched to a different neighborhood mostly for our own safety.
I don't know what it's like where you live (or the neighborhods next to where you live), but that's one possible reason why you don't see them around your house.

I went. I did the door to door thing. I am a girl. I even taught at the missionary training center, where they learn how to do the door to door thing.
Of course, most people assumed I was either a nun or a JW. Maybe that's your problem. You see them, but you don't stop to find out who they really are.

There are female missionaries. There aren't as many because men are "expected" to go and are able when they are 19. Women are given the opportunity, but it is not stressed that that they "should" go, and are able to go when they are 21. Many female missionaries serve in visitor's centers which reduces the number of female door-to-door knockers.

Young men are "very, very, very, very, very strongly encouraged" to go on missions at 19 years old, and to marry soon after returning.
Young women are "very, very, very, very, very strongly encouraged" to look to get married as soon as they are out of high school, but are "allowed" to go on a mission if they are older than 21 and still not married.
The age difference helps prevent most of the "promiscuity" that would inevitably occur, although not all of it is alleviated. Out of the 52,000 full-time missionaries, about 85% are young men, 8% are older couples or service missionaries, and 7% are young women.
Edit: Also, another hefty consideration is the possibility of two young ladies suddenly appearing at the door of an apartment or house of a rapist or murderer or something. This is why, as stated below, many of them serve at the visitors' centers, while the young men do most of the door-to-door proselytizing.

We have many sister missionaries, senior missionaries, work missionaries, health missionaries, etc. Where there is a will to serve, there is a place for you to serve.
