I'm on a weight loss program. The director is really nice and chatty. Last week, she sat next to me and said I should lose 1/2 a pound to a pound. Isn't that too slow? Why would she say that to me when I need about 40 to go? Thanks!

Losing weight too quickly can be very unhealthy. Most weight loss programs (Weight Watchers and LA Weight Loss for sure) recommend that you lose one or two pounds a week. Yes, it feels like it takes FOREVER, but if you're making good nutrition and exercise decisions, you're making a lifestyle change rather than "dieting." A drastic diet might help you lose weight fast, but they're usually not practical to maintain for the long term. When you stop the diet, you'll gain the weight right back. Making small changes can result in the slower, steadier, and more permanent weight loss that's healthiest.

The slower you lose, the higher chance of keeping it off long term because you won't be using a program that is extremely calorie restrictive or exercise intense.

Four pounds a week is the max recommended to lose and have a decent chance of keeping it off long term, but it's not easy to consistently lose 4 lbs a week.

Eat right, exercise, and have patience. ☺

people who lose weight slower tend to keep it off better. also, losing weight too fast can cause the body to go into starvation mode and then you won't lose at all. most experts recommend losing 1-3 pounds each week.

thats the healthy way to lose weight, you dont want to lose too much weight at one time because thats unhealthy and youll gain it all back faster. definitely take all the advice from your director, she knows what shes talking about. just stick with the program and youll see your results.

No, it's not to slow. Remember, you didn't put it on any faster - and slow and steady weight loss will be better for you health wise. Your body will acclimate to the weight better, it won't feel as if you are starving it, and your maintenance will be more successful.

Listen to your counselor. They know.

Ok, it could be they want you to do it the healthy way, or if you are paying these people by the week, the longer it takes you, the more money they get.

it is healthy to lose up to three pounds a week.
maybe she wants to be absolutely sure you'll keep it off though. i am not sure. hate to say it but it might be a money thing. they probably want you in the program longer because you'll fork over more money...

That is the 'healthy' amount to lose, but people I know are shedding nearly 3 a week, so....

to put it simply.. the healthy amount of weight to loose in a week is anywhere beween one and three pounds. this is probably why, its because she wants you to do it the healthy way =)
