Tony has put contract talks with Gibbs on hold until after the season. Gibbs said months ago that getting Tony's contract renewed was top priority and has recently repeated that during the Toyota announcement adding that he wanted a fast resolution. I don't know which way it will go but I think Tony isn't happy with the Toyota move.

I am suspicious myself. During the big press conference he talked about extending his contract with JGR and said he wanted to continue to race there for a long time. We know Chevrolet wants to get him back in a bowtie after Tony's contract runs out with Gibbs after the 2009 season and they are going to continue their relationship with him in sprint cars and possibly others for his dirt racing. The fact that he is pushing back further talks about an extension could be an indicator of his lack of confidence in Toyota or merely the fact that he just wants to concentrate on the chase right now, which is his reason for the halted contract negotiations. I would think with all the success he's had in GM cars that he has to have some doubts and concerns about the big switch.

Stewart Will Wait on Contract Extension: #20-Tony Stewart just wants to concentrate on trying to win a third Cup title and not worry about a contract extension with Joe Gibbs Racing - for now. "I'm not even going to work on it any more until this season is over - seriously," said Stewart, whose current contract runs through the 2009 season. With Gibbs switching next season from Chevrolets to Toyotas, there has been some speculation that General Motors would try to get Stewart back on one of its teams in 2010, but Stewart has been outwardly supportive of the change. For now, Stewart said he just wants to focus on the next 10 races.(Canadian Press/Associated Press)(9-17-2007)

It does not say he doesn't want an extension. Tony wants to focus on the Chase, then his contract.

If you hate Toyota or Tony, why bother commenting? Or is the 2 points worth that much to you?

Tony Stewart wants to win, and Toyota has not even been close to winning yet. Gibbs may have to offer him a lot of money. I don't understand switching from the most successful make to the least one. I guess we'll have to wait for the end of the season to see what he thinks. Contracts in NASCAR don't seem to be very binding anyway. (Kurt Busch, Jamie McMurray, Kyle Busch, etc.)

Just for the persons that do not understand the body will be Toyota not the engine. Gibbs will have the same engines that they always have had. Tony's focus is on the chase as it should. The teams that have struggled this year are starting to get it. Gibbs is a team in it for the hunt, we will only know how things end up next season. Tony may want to handle his contract after the season depending on how he finishes in the chase?

I think Tony will hold out for more money but will resign with Gibbs. I really think he wants to stay there until he retires.

Tony needs to stay in a "bowtie". He is far too talented to be racing a "rice burner". JGR killed their race team when they decided to move to Toyota. I think Tony should leave JGR. Maybe he will be the driver for the RCR's 4th car??? I think that would be a great fit.

Smoke is smart, he wants to see what a third title will bring to the table. Not just cash from Gibbs but freedom to race what he wants outside of Cup.

Tony has long expressed his growing dislike for the sport from Nascar choreographing the races to all the rule changes. He once said he liked moving from Pontiac to Chevrolet because it let's him know where he stands with the other competitors as most top teams were racing Chevrolet. As moody as Tony is I would not doubt that switching to Toyota could influence his decision to continue racing.

No, I think it's because as Tony has said in other interviews, he's focused on the next nine races right now, not the next season. He's in the Chase, and doesn't want the distractions.
