Good question! I always wince when lone survivors of disasters give thanks to god! What about all the others??

And Terry Prachett has pointed out, whilst the chances of personal survival could be said the be miraculous, so could the chances of being killed or injured - the tree has to fall in just the right direction and at the right time, the bolt has to succumb to metal fatigue at just that precise moment, etc etc. Why is divine intervention not cited as the CAUSE of accidents and disasters, only credited with their lack of 100% mortality?

The gods, or God, does not cause them.

Natural disasters are indiscriminate in who they kill and affect, when God brings destruction there are always survivors and people are given ample warning to save themselves.

Because god created everything(apparently) but is not associated with nature- lucky him/she/it!! We have to thank him/she/it for saving us from the menace he/she /it causes!! unless you are a deist of course and believe that a god created the world but left it to it's own devices.

DUH!! because "miracle" has positive conitations i.e. HAPPY!! but... "disasters" are kind of... bad things. so they would kind of contradict each other!! :P
