I'm looking for something that you consider a gem, but nobody else seems to know about.
Thanks.

bettie - tough question. It's easier to say that I don't listen to modern country or polka. Other than that, I probably like it.

8 track minds - Murder ballads?
I didn't know that was a genre. I knew a guy a while ago who worked multiple shifts with me....we'd go out on a receiving dock late at night and play guitar...he had a song called "murder ballad".

Concrete Blond. They did a lot more than just "The Vampire Song" (in fact that hardly sounds like them at all). I really like Still In Hollywood; they did some great covers of Leonard Cohen and even Hendrix. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concrete_blond

I so agree with the Nick Cave suggestion. His style is tough to describe (I like to call it "Dark Elevator") but he is powerfully emotional in his ballads as well as his hard hitting songs. Murder Ballads is one of his best albums, but I prefer the album Let Love In (it has the his song "Red Right Hand" from the X-files soundtrack). Many of his songs use s kind of Rock-A-Billy sound with twangy guitars and church organs. He is incredible. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_Cave

I, also, recommend PJ Harvey (Cave's ex, and his guitarist's sister). "Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea" is one of the most incredible albums I have ever heard (many of her other albums are more raw and less polished). A friend described it as live anthems and road trips. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polly_Jean_Harvey

You are welcome to my recommendations. Maybe you have already heard of them maybe not. Maybe you will love them, maybe not.

The Chieftains are an Irish folk group and have been together for thirty years or more.

The Specials were a late 70's early 80's ska group and only put out two (I think) records. Their self-titled record is very good, "More Specials" not so much

The Housemartins were around in the early to mid 1980's and made a few "pop"-y discs. The last I heard of them they morphed into Christian worship music.

Jonathan Richman is hard to describe. You will either love him or hate him.

Oh yeah, I second the XTC recommendation.

XTC - obscure band from the late 70s and 80. Try their album English Settlement if you have never heard of them.

The Shins - I think they are sort of well-known, but anyway, I think they are awesome.

Black Aliss,
XTC was a side project of the Pixies? I don't know what XTC you are referring to, but the XTC I am talking about is the British band with Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding. They were a band before the Pixies were. The Pixies is another awesome band, though! I love Frank Black.

Dream Theater is my favorite band, and their album Scenes from a Memory is a brilliant little rock opera....and they are far from being a household name despite thier 20 + years in the biz.

I know you're somewhat of a music buff, and probably know about them, but I'll throw it out there anyway : Dream Theater.

Anything they released between 'Images and Words' and Train of Thought' is golden. The best band that nobody has ever heard of (it seems).

What kind of music do you generally like? Because I could recommend stuff, but I'd hate for you to hate it...

Edit: My recommendation for today is The Horrorpops. Psychobilly, great fun. =0)
