Nikon first got noticed by photographers who stopped in Japan on their way to cover the Korean War. These photographers discovered that Nikon was making Leica-mount lenses of equal or better quality than Leica. Nikon was also generous in providing working pros with a complete kit of cameras and lenses. Of course, Nikon used these photographers in their advertisements. It didn't take long for the words "Nikon" and "professional photographer" to become closely linked. Many amateur photographers who wished to emulate the "pros" bought into the Nikon mystique. There can be no argument about Nikon's build quality as far as the ruggedness of their cameras.

I would say it is the optics. They have developed that area, I believe, more then any other camera make. At least in the SLR area. Nikkor on a lens mean quality.
I bought a Canon digital SLR and I never liked the photos it took, and I had a couple of great lens. Then I went a got a D80 and love the results. Also, I can use my old Nikon lens from my 35mm days. Have to either guess the settings from my knowledge or a light meter.
Nikon is just great.

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that Nikon is thinking in the long term, they're not looking for solutions for short term trends, but are trying to anticipate where photography in general is heading.

They are also committed to their users. When Nikon made the move to autofocus, they looked at how they could keep their future products compatible with their current products. As a result, I can still use all of my older manual Nikkor lenses on my new autofocus body.

All of the above - as long as we are talking about SLR's and digital SLR's.

Nikon and Canon are a cut above the rest at this point. Pentax WILL be joining them in that upper echelon soon, as they have jumped into the digital world 100% and they have always made a fine camera.

I'm a Nikon user, but I admit that other makers are in the same league.

Their DSLRs are, but their digicams don't cut the mustard.

If you think your little compact Nikon is a great camera... well, you haven't tried a Fuji, Sony or Panasonic.
