I'd like to be able to run multiple virtual machines without first having to load a base OS that eats up my machine's resources. Is my best option to just install it on top of a very basic Linux kernel or can I configure it to be it's own OS. Or is there some other product I should be looking at.

Note: I know that VMWare ESX server runs on "bare metal" as they say-but I'm looking for a free alternative.

You're missing the point. The whole point of virtualization is NOT to load a completely new OS, but to "virtualize" that new OS within the existing OS. It's like running an emulator for say... NES. But even emulator needs some basic hardware like video and sound... and an existing operating system. Put that emulator into a computer with NO OS at all, and it won't do jack.

If you don't want a base OS, just use mutli-boot / boot manager and boot straight into the OS of your choice.

I don't think that VMWare has it's own kernel coz if it does... why need the installation ??

so no I don't think it can run on it's own, and for best results: yes, run it on linux
