There is a man named Marvin Harris who wrote a book called "Cannibals and Kings" and one called "Cows, Pigs, Wars and Witches" They are both very good and make you think. Harris was an atheist who was also a sociologist. There is another book called "The Jewish Theory of Everything" by Max Anteby that attempts to answer many of the questions such as "why is there war". Another book is called "Beyond Reasonable Doubt" by Rabbi Shmuel Wiseman. "The Science in Torah" by Yehudi Levi who also wrote "Torah and Science". "Fingerprints on the Universe" by Louis Pollack is excellent. "Thinking about Creation" by Andrew Goldfinger who is a physicist. "The Hidden Face of God" by Dr. Gerald Schroeder who is a nuclear physicist and a biologist as well as an Orthodox Jew. He also wrote "Genesis and the Big Bang" and "The Science of God." I am sorry I can't give you more but I think these are interesting and fair. They will say where they run into problems but make you think one way or the other.
I am Jewish so my knowledge stems from Jewish writers but I would assume there are books written by non-Jews that go over the same thing if you would prefer that.
I am like you. I like anything that makes me think. That is why the Harris books are so good. I don't agree with what he said but they made me think like never before.
Hope you find what you are looking for.
Cheers!

Right now, I'm reading "Team of Rivals" by Doris Kearns Goodwin. It's about Lincoln's cabinet, and how he chose a team of people who had been his competitors for the office. Interesting stuff for me, but I'm a geek.

Bertrand Russell's "Why I am Not a Christian"
and I like Colleen McCullough's series on Rome...there are six total and are historical fiction from Marius to Caesar. I enjoyed them very much.

Is fiction okay?
I recommend to pretty much anyone of mature reading age The Brothers Karamazov, which is in my not-so-humble literary opinion the best novel ever written.
Yes, it will make you think.
