Rule of thumb with puppies is they need to potty after playing & about a half hour after drinking & immediately when they wake up from sleeping. You won't want to let the puppy drink whenever it pleases then it will be going to the bathroom all the time. You should be in constant view of the puppy to see what it is doing at all times. You should get the puppy into a habit of eating at certain times in the day, that way you can get it into the habit of going to the bathroom at certain times as well. It's all about training.
I disagree with the answer above about rubbing it's nose in the mess. You need to take the puppy to the mess & scold the mess, not the puppy. Unless you can catch the puppy in the act of making the mess you cannot scold it for the mess because you will only confuse it as to why it is being scolded. If you rub it's nose in it, you will only casuse the puppy to act out. Would you like to have your nose rubbed in a mistake rather than being told it was wrong?

Puppies cannot "hold it" for very long. As a rule of thumb it is their age in months +2, so the maximum time a 4 month old puppy can hold it would be 6 hours. But it varies by breed. Also for puppies, do not allow them run of the house until they are trained (house and behavior). Slowly expand the area they have to play as they are better at holding it. Always take them out after playing, sleeping, eating, or chewing. Keep them in a crate when you can't watch them. The crate should only be big enough for them to turn around and lie down.

Puppies use the bathroom frequently after meals, water and activity. Monitor your puppy. Watch what and when he eats and also the length of time he is active. It takes about 30min after any of these activities for you puppy to need to go outside for a potty break. Now is also the time you want to be sturn in housebreaking. Praise him when he uses the potty outside. Rub his nose in any messes that he may/ will make and take him outside immediatley after the accident. Never punish them. Just give them praise for doing the right thing. Positive reinforcement is the best way to get your puppy in good habbits so that training continues to be easy.
All in all, if your puppy has eaten, drank or played recently keep an eye out becuase he will need to go "potty".

Well, often. They have 8-week old bladders.
The easiest way to train a puppy that will be an "inside" dog is to use a crate. Make sure its small enough that he wont have room to move around a whole lot in there and he wont go to bathroom in there.
Make sure you take him directly outside when you get home from work, directly after feeding and generally about once an hour or if you notice him sniffing around (it'll look like he's following a scent trail).
Praise him for going to the bathroom outside and make sure you use the same word for what he's doing....they really dont know what poo and pee is in our language, its all the same to them.

Every 2 hours at the max during waking hours and every 4-5 hours overnight has been my experience as the owner of 2 Pugs and a trainer of many others.
Keep in mind Pugs are small dogs that simply don't have the bladder size of large dogs like German Shepherds.

A general measuring tool would be the dog's age (in months) equal to hours. For example, your puppy is 8 wks, which is 2 months old. He/she should be able to go 2 hours and maybe 3 between occurrences. 2 mo. = 2 hr (or so).
This measuring tool can be used until your puppy is about a year old.

At least every 2 hrs. I've found that the quickest way to house train a pup is this. Crate him at night and any other time when you are not going to watch him. Let him out after meals and also as soon as he wakes up. If he is playing and suddenly seems distracted, scoop him up and take him outside. It's good to say a word when you put him out... like piddle or something. Eventually he will learn that when you say that word, that is what he is supposed to do...not play around.
But yeah, every 2 hrs, after sleep, after meals and after play.

It sounds like alot - but you really need to take them out at least every hour and then every 2 weeks increase it an hour. until you get to 8-9 hours at the most. Hope that makes sense - its the best way I know how to put it. lol It has worked for every dog I have had.

You want to bring them outside about every half and hour to an hour and just walk them for a little bit. Make sure you give them A LOT of praise when they go potty outside, and make sure you ALWAYS bring them out about 20 minutes after they eat or drink ANYTHING.
