every time we go for a walk he decides to roll in something awful, i think it is foxes poo but why does he do it in the first place.

He wants mask his smell, so later when you let him out. He can go hunt down the fox, and let him know to stay away from your schnauzers turf.

It's natural for some breeds of dogs to try to diguise their own natural scent if they were originally bred to hunt small animals as was the miniature Schnauzer.

Hiya, alot of dogs will roll in something (we find discusting) too mask their own scent, dogs scense of smell is far greater than ours, so to them it seems like the logical thing to do, to them it will stop other animals smelling them and knowing of theyre prescence. Try some diversion techniques untill he gets the message. Try to find something thats more appealing to him than the strong odour of fox muck. Good luck x

Dogs that hunt like to disguise their own smell so that the prey will not be alarmed. It's instinct, but some dogs do have preferences. My springer liked thing that were green and runny.

To him it is an interesting smell, kind of like Tag or Axe body spray for dogs. Animals have their own likes that are different from ours.
