I believe He definitely was. He made a lot of outrageous claims that many other religious leaders have made that we consider "good" people. Let me make a quote:
“I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: ‘I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God.’ That is one thing that we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic-on a level with a man who says he is a poached egg-or else he would be the devil of hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.”
C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity, pg. 52
Now the only difference is that Christ resurrection validated every claim that He made. Many have tried to refute the resurrection but have been crushed beneath the weight of the evidence given in the bible and from secular historical sources. Another great proof is the millions of lives that have been transformed by the gospel of Jesus Christ. Many even from liablities to assets to society.

That is an interesting question. We 'assume' Jesus was "honest" based on 'what we know' about his life from the 'Bible stories' about him. Most of what Jesus is said to have 'done' though was 'tell stories' called Parables ... they are 'made up to illustrate' the POINTS that he was trying to teach his followers. 'Making things up' is what is called 'lying' by many ... which 'proves' that Jesus was DISHONEST. Of course Jesus was 'honest' ... he was the Son of God who came to earth as a man to give us 'teachings' and he died on the cross for the sins of ALL of us. How could a 'known liar' be 'honest' ... when his 'dishonesty' is leading us toward a 'greater truth' and we are so ignorant that we couldn't understand in God's language, and need to be 'told' in human language and actions ... we are 'like children' who need to 'learn the truth' but can do so only with 'made up stories' ... but JESUS was 'honest' ... and Jesus Christ was THE SON OF GOD.

As the first "handedness" of any authors that wrote about him is doubtful and he didn't write his own teachings or life down, it is futile to speculate whether he was honest or not.
Edit:
He could have been totally honest, but that does not mean that he was the son of god or a prophet. That is to say, he could have been telling the true as he knew it or believed it to be, but if there is no god, then he was just expressing his belief....

Jesus was always honest. Thats what cost him his life. he was too honest and sincere. Too many fakes can kill you if you be too honest. He said just what God told him to say and he did just what God him to do.Isaiah 53.

Unfortunately, we don't have any records written by Jesus. All we have are second-hand accounts decades after he lived. It's difficult to say who he was based on this.

If Jesus existed at all, we don't really know anything about him. The records we have are just myths and legends.
