She is a long hair and she has an appt to get shaved tomorrow...we get her shaved every 4 months. anyhow, she has been yowling and peeing on herself and today she started throwing up (food not hair). Should I take her to the vet or wait to see if shaving helps?

take her to the vet. It sounds like she may have a urinary tract infection.

I don't think it has anything to do with her haircuts. She needs to see the vet. But as long as she's there, you might as well have the vet take care of the haircut.

Also, get the vet's input about getting your cat shaved every four months. I had a friend who had a Persian cat and she got him a trim every summer, but I'm not sure whether year-round shaving is all that great for a cat. Maybe I'm just being a little paranoid, but as long as she's at the vet it would be a good idea to ask if everything's OK with the shaving routine you've got her on. Good luck!

Your cat is ill and needs to go to the vet. As for 'shaving' your long haired cat every four months, that could be the 'start' of your cat's illness. When a pet has 'fur' it's there for a 'reason' ... and a 'long haired cat' NEEDS all of that fur to stay warm in the winter and to stay cool in the summer. By shaving it constantly it would 'adjust' ... but shaving it only once every four months, means is must 'constantly change' the way it 'responds' to the weather. STOP SHAVING YOUR CAT, and take her to the vet immediately. Her yowling and peeing and vomiting tells me there is 'something very wrong' with her digestive tract ... and ONLY a vet can cure that ... IF you get her to the vet in time.

Just to put this into perspective, if a child was crying, wetting itself and vomiting, would you take it to a hairdresser? I hope you'd go to a doctor. Why would having a cat's hair shaved the following day alleviate such symptoms? It's obvious that your cat is sick and in pain, so she needs to see a vet urgently. Cats are very clean animals and for one to pee on itself means there is a problem, not simply a hairball.

I hope all goes well with the vet. :-)

Peeing on herself and yowling are signs of illness. Call the vet asap.

This does not sound good. I would forget the shaving for now at least. It maybe a bad urinary tract infection or it maybe much worse. I would get her to the vet right away. It sounds as if she is in a bad way.

She is in pain or that is what it sounds like to me. Shaving her hair isnt going to help. She needs to be taken to the vet if she is peeing, screaming, and throwin up. Those are all signs that something bad is really going on.

I would definitely take her to the vet!! We have a long haired cat that get shaved twice a year. She's never peed on herself or threw up like that (except for hairballs)...yeah, take her to the vet.

I wouldn't wait for shaving. Cats are pretty sensitive and they can become very ill if they vomit for long periods of time. She could be vomiting because of a simple gastrointestinal upset, or something more serious like a liver problem. If she's urinating--that could point to something like a urinary tract infection, or bladder stones. Definately take her to a vet, you don't want to wait.
