Speaking Chinese, Mandarin or Cantonese is spoken by lots of American 2nd generation Chinese, but writing it takes years of learning. There is no definite alphabet so all the characters have to be memorized, also in China itself many cannot read well, only some. It takes years to learn and most Chinese today are busy working for a living. Hard life, many hours of work before going home to cook and tend to the family. So Vanessa Wu may speak but not write Chinese.

I highly doubt it. He's a ABC from the So cal area. Most ABCs can speak/understand chinese but rarely can they read. Even if they did go to chinese school at a young age, they would probably be able to read/ write a few words or so.
