I had actually been told by Christians shopping at the store I worked in that I shouldn't be working on the Sabbath. I always smiled and said "Well if people weren't shopping on the Sabbath, then I wouldn't be working." I think very few of them got the irony.

"Judge not that ye be not judged." So what is your point? I can't make a judgment without knowing motives. Maybe some of these people are hypocritical but do I live up to my own high standards all the time?
Give these people a break. Not everyone in the restaurants and stores just came from church. Some people work six days each week and only have one day to catch up on everything.

I have yet to meet a person who has never been a hypocrite...why do people think church people are any different than they are? Church people are not perfect, they are hypocritical at times and sometimes don't think about certain things...such as your question.
Secondly, people define "work" in different ways. Church goers who eat at a restaurant after church may believe they are abiding by the rule of not working on Sunday as cooking a meal could be construed as work.
Like wise, some people would not classify errands and grocery shopping as work because they are not being paid for their services.
It all seems to boil down to how an individual defines "work".

well...
If you are a Christian then: The Israelites originally "kept the sabbath holy" meaning they didn't do any work on Saturday. This was because under the "Old Covenant" work was forbidden on that day by the ten commandments. The "New Covenant" is about salvation through Jesus, not following the law. Early Christians changed the day to celebrate Jesus and worship God from Saturday to Sunday, partially because Jesus was raised from the dead on a Sunday. Although it is a very good idea to set aside one day to rest, Christian's don't have to (Mark 2:27); however some Christians are still confused and think they have to avoid all work on Sundays.
There are some Christians who set aside Saturday or Sunday as a day to seek God and avoid all work, not because they have to, but because they want to.
Christian's don't have to avoid work on Sunday, and it isn't evil to go to a restaurant on Sunday where people work.
If you aren't a follower of Jesus, then I guess you can make up whatever you want.

Hi YEAHthatsRIGHT!!
If you will do a serious study of the New Testament you will find in the letters of Paul that 9 of the 10 commandments are reinstated. But of course one is not. Guess which one. Right you are, the fourth. Not that we shouldn't have a day a rest, refreshing and worship. We should. But as Christians we are
not just supposed to keep one day Holy. Rather we are to be
Holy 24/7/365.
1Pe 1:16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

You are confusing Sunday with Shabbat. The Jewish people were commanded within the Torah to not work on Saturday. The church has never been given such a command.
Colossians 2:16
So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.
I worship Jesus every day.

Mar 2:24 And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?
Mar 2:25 And he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him?
Mar 2:26 How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?
Mar 2:27 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:
Mar 2:28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

I agree with you whole heartedly. The Jews have been keeping Friday evening to Saturday evening for years and call it the Sabbath. One of the 10 Commandments is "Remember the Sabbath day to keep it Holy."
Exodus 20:8 Jesus said, "Keep my commandments."
If we know the Sabbath day is Saturday, why are we worshiping on Sunday? Also my body is the temple of God and God dwells inside of me so the church is nothing but a social gathering of the saints. And God says where 2 or 3 are gathered together in His name He will be there also. I still don't think we have it right.

Sin is sin. It cannot be diluted. Whether it be saying something under your breath about your parents or wishing you owned something someone else does or working on the Sabbath. The Scripture says to REMEMBER, not reconcile. Jesus told an old man to get up and carry his bed home on the Sabbath. This infuriated the Pharises. But it was God's way of showing the ones that needed to know it that the rest day is for obedience.
