It was a very hard book to read. I'm 40 years old and I've seen a lot of bad things in the world over my lifetime. But the things in the book were horrifying. What religions do in the name of their gods is appaling, degrading, sickening and repulsive. There were times I had to put the book down after reading only a few pages. How anyone who is religious, read this book and STILL be religious is beyond me.
Has anyone else read it and what are your thoughts?

I've read it twice. Powerful, eh? We seem to be in a great revival of atheist thought, with at least four recent best-sellering books on the shelves. Which means folks out there are beginning to know what it's all about, this invisible god-in-the-sky thing and the almost endless evils of Christianity and Islam. A new day is a'rising.

I don't need confirmation of what I know.
Religion is bad, but religion is earthly and physical and participated in by people that don't understand the point. Much if not all of religion is an attempt for natural man to "ape" enlightened man. The earthly remnants of enlightened men are considered "Holy" or "divine" their words taken literally without understanding or wisdom.

Religion is wholesale superstition.

Spirituality is the experience of exploring God from within yourself. If you seek inspiration from religion then keep it at a distance because it's a "tar baby" and does more to entrap and limit than it does to liberate you.

When you "Get it" nothing will surprise you.

I haven't read that book, but have come to the same realizations on my own. You have to understand that humans are naturally a tribalistic species. If we didn't have religion, we would still form groups and fight with each other. Nothing will change that, unless we get really creative in the future with mind-control or controlled breeding or something. What's so annoying about people acting horrible in the name of religion is the obvious hypocrisy of it.

But remember, you can still be spiritual and believe in higher powers. And you can see all the good things that organized religion has brought, including many charities and contributing to the good behavior and happiness of all the people who would be otherwise unlawful or unhappy with the idea that they are alone in the world and there is no higher meaning to all of this.

i've got no longer examine the e book nor do I intend to envision it. See, this is like this. in the adventure that your ideas is crammed with the splendid variety of expertise you do no longer choose to bypass over something that is actual yet ineffective to outlive. purely through fact particular non secular communities have misused faith does no longer mean that faith itself is undesirable, purely like human beings death from automobile crashes does no longer mean that autos are undesirable. What correct to the atrocities committed under the atheistic communism? Blaming faith could be common however the alternative isn't quite ideal. besides, this defaming of religion could be allowed purely in a society the place faith is approved. I doubt if faith could be approved in an atheistic society. it extremely is extra constructive to have self belief (I mean Christianity and not Islam) and have freedom than to have no faith and no freedom.

Religion is an inborn human nature that the devil takes advantage of. Jehovah God imposed rules and regulations to restrict, and prevent false religion. Those ignoring His commandments and teachings of wisdom will come to practicing evil religion of some sort.
For Satan is misleading the entire inhabited earth. ~ Revelation 12:9

Indeed, God is not "great" of great-->greater-->greatest;
For only the greatest of 3 things never fails: 1Cor 13:13.

But Moses' Law was "great"<--greater<--greatest,
notably "great terror" to all Israel(of Jacob-->Israel): Deuteronomy 34:12.

Twice fallen Baby-lon is "great": Revelation 17:5; 18:2.

America the great? Twice fallen?

As for "religion", the Bible compares only two sorts:
- IMPure religions: arrive defiled, and get worse-end.
- Pure religion: arrives undefiled, remains unspotted.

As for the author of God is not great, he should learn:
it's preposterous order to teach first, and learn after;
and learn what meaneth Hosea 6:6-->Matthew 9:13.

The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.

"religion" and "organized religion" are often used interchangeably... unfortunately.

Personal religion can be about true sprituality, liberation and self-improvement; it's something organizations can only touch upon occassionally and randomly - like a blind man chasing a mouse with a blowtorch, he's more likely to set the curtains on fire.
