women on a golf course are a pain in the butt.they are only fit for raking bunkers and serving tea.have a word with yourself and do yourself a massive favour, give her some extra pocket money, let her go shopping and have yourself 4 hours of peace.

Lots of good answers here. The best way I believe is to first get her fitted for clubs before she even hits a ball this way she will have the best chance to hit the ball as cleanly as possible right out the gate. Next take her to a range a couple of times just to get a feel for the game and her swing. DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT, laugh at her when she first starts out, even jokingly. I had a buddy who took a non athlete girlfriend out to the range and when she gripped and held the club in a very unconvetionaly way he couldn't help but let out a chuckle. She threw done the club and he hasn't been able to get her out since. Even after he tried to explain that he thought it was more cute than anything she still wouldn't give it another shot.
After she starts hitting the ball solidly for the most part start taking her to mini golf or putt putt courses. This is a fun way to get the feel of putting. Next a little work on practice greens for the short game is a good idea and putting won't be as tough because of the fun practice she has had on the putt putt course. Finally try her on a little uncrowded par 3 pitch and putt course and see how she does then maybe she will be ready for a shorter 18 hole course. Good luck to you, I've been looking for a mate to play golf with and worked at a country club over the summer and was amazed how many wives played. I always wondered if the spouses had played before they met or if the husbands had had to get their wives into it and how they had done it.

Thinking you are asking seriously...I have a few suggestions.
1. Let her know it's a great activity that...
a. She can do alone.
b. Can do with you.
c. Can do with friends.
d. Can do with your kids.
2. Get her out to a driving range PRIOR to going on a golf course, so she feels confident about driving. It can be intimidating and frustrating if she can't drive a ball.
3. Definitely get her colored golf balls and matching tees. A cute outfit will help, too!
4. BUT MOSTLY! Have fun when you're together, and don't get mad if she fails in the beginning. Let her KNOW how WONDERFUL she is for participating in an activity you love!!

You have to appeal to her desire to spend quality time with her husband...you! That's key. Golf is a great sport because its an outdoor activity with so many beautiful places to play that are great for husband/wife bonding. Take her to a driving range to get a feel for it. No chasing the ball required! Here's a tip though.... Get her real lessons at a local course or driving range. Try to avoid teaching her yourself because when you are just beginning it can be VERY frustrating. And you don't want to be the one dealing with that or she may not want to go out with you ever! So let her start out with someone else showing her correct technique and giving advice. Then when she's ready take her out with just the two of you. No audience to stress her out unless she a natural.
My dad got my mom and I lessons so that we could golf as a family. I loved it. We even took a week golfing trip at Myrtle Beach. Now, years later my husband golfs and we have an annual family outing with in-laws and cousins too! So much fun! Just show her lots of patience and have fun together!
Oh and by the way....when you know she's hooked, surprise her with her own bag and clubs in her favorite color. Then she'll be so excited to go golfing whenever she can!

I think most of the "serious" answers here are pretty good. One of the things my wife likes about it is that it's outdoors. It is really a good walk. (not spoiled in my book). We have also decided that we want to play in all 50 states. The travel is worth the frustration of the actual golf. 22 states in 3 yrs.

If you can't get her to the golf course, invite some friends, and female partners/wives who play golf, round (for dinner?) and meet them in the pub and other social watering holes until she regards them as friends. Don't tell anyone of your hidden agenda, they may put too much pressure on. She's much more likely to get interested for the social side than because you think it's a good idea for her to trudge across fields with holes and sandpits in them, dragging a heavy bag and hitting a little ball ahead of her. Finally, get them to invite her (eg: for a fours round) - make sure it's a sunny day and include time in the club house afterwards.

Lead her to believe that there is a good looking young girl at the golf club who keeps talking to you,
She will soon want to come with you !

Why I wanted to play -- it is a sport that I can play into retirement. I can play with my spouse, my friends, or both. I can play more slowly -- and if I'm doing poorly on a hole, I can simply pick up my ball and let my partners play it out -- and rejoin them on the next tee.
Don't keep score for a while, and applaud every shot that's solid contact (even if it is short or crooked -- solid is good!)
She won't need 'everything' right away, used clubs are fine to start with, but be sure that she has her 'own' visor, glove, balls and tees. Women's clubs are a must -- don't make her struggle to use your longer, heavier, stiffer 'man' clubs.

Put a tiara in every hole!
Failing that, the previous poster (beetlebug) is quite right. Get her to the driving range and she may actually enjoy herself without having to commit to anything yet. I am doing the baby-steps thing and have bought my wife a 5 iron, 3 wood and a pitching wedge... Now I am on the "suggesting" stage and hope she'll take to it.
