I'm planning to take my cats to a vet who's an hour's drive from here. How do I prevent them from pissing or pooing in my car during the trip? I wouldn't know if they did their business or not prior to our trip. thanks!

If you can, put a litter pan with litter in it in the back of your car before you go on the road.

Most cats can wait before going to the litterbox to do their business. However, the stress of being taken out of their home and into the car for a long ride may be stressful enough for them to have to use their litter box.

Have you taken your cats in the car for a ride before? Are you comfortable, and are they comfortable, not being confined to a cat carrier? In other words, do you feel confident in letting the cats remain free in the back of your car while you are driving? If you think that the cats will behave while you are driving the car, then let them rest in the back of the car, and let them have access to the litter box.

Otherwise, place thick towels folded in their cat carriers, so that if they urinate on the way to the vet's, the towels will absorb the urine. Cats will usually urinate in their carriers when frightened and/or stressed. Be sure to bring clean towels and a couple of plastic bags so that you can change the towels in the carriers before leaving the vet's office. You can put the towels the kitties have urinated on in the plastic bags, and wash them when you return home.

You can also call the vet and ask if there is something the vet can recommend to calm the cats while they are en route to the vet's office.

Good luck.

Long ride for the cats. Use a large cat carrier for more than one cat. Also you could try not feeding them after 8 p.m. the night before. Just give them water, until you get them back home if it isn't All day. Carriers are available at walmart or almost any department store, pet supply or even your vet should have a disposable one. This will protect your car and your pet too.

Definitely invest in a carrier large enough for both kitties. You can also line the carrier with newspaper both whole and shredded. If they needed to eliminate the newspaper would absorb all of the mess.

The ones at Wal-Mart are priced between $20 and $30.

As an aside I live in Florida and it is against the law to have a cat or dog unrestrained in the car.

Towels worked for us. A super absorbent towel in each kitty box. You could take a short break as well, because an hour is a long time to be in the car to a cat.

Doesn't matter if they just went before you put them in the car. If they are scared, they may let it all come out. I'm assuming you are planning on keeping them in crates. That way if they do piss it won't be in your car. Also, instead of a crate, there are cat bags you can buy. The only thing that sticks out is their head. They have a tendency to be a lot calmer in those, and hence usually won't have to pee or poop.

A carrier is mandatory with all our cats. It keeps them from darting out the door, from getting crushed in a closing door, from getting under the gas pedal or under the seat where they won't come out from.

A carrier keeps them safely contained and out of your way so you can drive the car without interferance. Check out the Goodwill stores, they sometimes have them for $5. Otherwise invest in one from the pet supply stores. It should be tall enough for them to step into without having to crouch.

If you have the cat in a carrier, the worst it will do is go in the carrier. Not nice, but your car will survive.

I've used old towels in my cat carrier; only had one cat pee, but he was really scared.
