Okay, I was cleaning up the yard a couple of days ago, and I just threw a couple of camping chairs inside the garage ( half way in and half way out). Later my husband went out and shut the garage door and the opener happend to break (it is 13 yrs old and been hit by lightening twice). Any way the garage opener broke and he blamed me for it, which I understand. I said that he should have looked before closing the door, I mean for crying out loud they are neon orange and neon yellow, how can you miss them!!!! Any way we got a new opener. We are not mad at each other or anything. I was just curious...who is to blame...me or my husband?

We are not mad at each other, it is just one of those things where we both want to be right. I love all you guys...you are all so honest. I agree it is my fault for leaving the chairs there and his fault for not looking. I am just happy that we finally got the new garage door opener that we so desparately needed.

Your fault for leaving the chairs in the door.
His for not looking before closing the door.
The door openers fault for being so damned old.

Both. You should of placed them completely within the garage and yes he could of checked to see that there was nothing in the way.
I am confused because the garage door opener is the remote control that opens the door. I would assume that closing the door on the chairs would ruin the automatic door. I can see the door being hit by lightning twice but the remote control being left outside to be hit by lightning. What's with that?? Bring the control(the garage door opener) in out of the elements. You needed a new one any way.

An aging garage door opener broke and no one is at fault for that. The thing wore out. As for the chairs, they should have been more carefully put away to be sure and no one should close a door without first checking to be sure the path is clear. Each of you was a bit careless there and each was correct in pointing it out to the other. Offsetting penalties as they say in football.

You are to blame for not putting the chairs back correctly and he is to blame for not looking first but honestly it does become a habit and people usually don't look when shutting the garage door and the garage door opener is to blame because it attracts too much lightning and breaks easily.

Why does it have to be an issue of who's fault is it? Can it not just be attributed to cleaning out and the old garage door should have been dealt with a long time ago?... from both sides. Pointing fingers a lot of times if just a complete waste of time as opposed to just dealing with all the day to day stuff that everyone deals with and move on by not dwelling on finger pointing stuff.

Neither. It is the garage door opener's fault for breaking! Forgive and forget.
5 simple rules to live by in life:
1) Free your heart from hatred
2) Free your mind from worries
3) Live simply.
4) Give more.
5) Be grateful everyday
There is more to life than worrying about the garage door opener :)

If you were putting the chairs away by leaving them 1/2 in and 1/2 out of the garage, then i suppose it's your fault, since i'm assuming that isn't where you generally store them.
True, your husband could have looked before he put the door down.
I guess just chalk it up to an accident and move on!
take care too!

It sounds like it would have broke regardless, I don't know how many times mine has hit something that was just in the way, there supposed to stop when that happens. Unless there was something already wrong with it. You probably should have put them all the way in the garage, but he should have looked before closing it, so your both to blame.

Both of y'all really. You should have put them in the garage a lot better yet he should have looked before closing the door. It's just one of those things that happen. so really, no one is to blame. just be glad the chairs weren't something more valuable like a life.....just one of the things that happen.
