if the spouse of the deceased gets ill and has to go out to the restroom? (not meaning to be funny - I just wondered what would happen)

Caretaker, thanks for your concern, but no one has passed away for quite some time. It was just one of those things that pops into your head at 3:21 a.m., ya know?

When in a funeral where the spouse of the deceased gets ill, the funeral does indeed pause. After this, if the spouse does not come back within 10 minutes, then the funeral must stop. i know this from experiance, where my cousin died, and his spouse was having lady problems. after 5 minutes she came back, but we asked the reverand later after the funeral.

No, if the spouse has to leave the room the funeral would just continue, otherwise it would simply daw attention to the spouse's situation which would be uncomfortable for them.
Cheers :-)
Edited to say: After reading the answerer above, it seems this would depend on the situation and perhaps on where the funeral was held. Whatever makes the relatives feel most comfortable would be the key.

It has to carry on, some places are run like a conveyor belt with a funeral every half hour.

I don't think it should stop. It would only draw more attention to the person who is upset enough. Someone should escort that person from the room and escort them back again.

It's okay. As long as the deceased doesn't mind.

I don't think it would. I think that there should be barf bags in the car. I don't know this for sure, but I really do think the procession would not stop for a head call.

I suppose it would depend on whoever is conducting or speaking at the time.
